The Cumberland flag: Parnassus flowers over the waves

The Cumberland flag is a green field with three white grass-of-Parnassus flowers in a row across the top, over wavy bars of white and blue along the bottom. The grass of Parnassus is the county flower of Cumberland, a white five-petalled bloom of the fells and the Solway marshes that was on the arms of the old county council, and the waves stand for the lakes, the Eden and the Solway coast. The design was chosen in a public competition and registered with the Flag Institute as the county flag in 2012, and it flies from Carlisle Civic Centre and from Cockermouth, Keswick and Whitehaven. Our Cumberland flag is that registered design in both grades and the full size range.

Where the flowers fly

The flag goes up for the Cumberland Show at Carlisle in June, Carlisle United at Brunton Park and Workington Reds at Borough Park, the Cockermouth, Penrith, Keswick and Skelton shows, Egremont Crab Fair and its gurning in September, the Keswick Mountain Festival and the Keswick Convention, the Whitehaven and Maryport harbour festivals, the Carlisle Great Fair and the pageant at the castle, Hadrian’s Wall from Bowness to Birdoswald, the Solway Firth and Silloth green, the Lake District from Derwentwater to Wastwater, Grasmoor and Scafell Pike, Ennerdale and Buttermere, Penrith and Alston on the Pennine side, the Cumbrian wrestling rings at the shows, and on garden poles from Longtown to Millom for jubilees and coronations. Cumberland came back as a council name in 2023, so the flag is on the new signs too. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Cumberland flags are held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat on Derwentwater or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a campsite, and 8ft x 5ft for a showground, a castle or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show weekend or a match; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching, which is the one for a fell or Solway pole that takes Cumbrian rain and wind all year. Each grade has eyelets, and rope and toggle can be specified on the DuraFlag for a halyard pole.

Cumberland bunting

Cumberland bunting repeats the flowers and waves on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a campsite shop or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a show marquee or a harbour railing, and strings joined end to end will cross Main Street in Cockermouth or the market square in Keswick for the show.

Hand flags and table flags

Cumberland hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the showground at Carlisle. On the desk there is the Cumberland table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. Westmorland, Northumberland, Lancashire and County Durham are under county flags.
