The Lincolnshire flag: cross, fleur-de-lis, green and blue
The Lincolnshire flag is a red cross edged in gold on a field quartered green and blue, with a gold fleur-de-lis at the centre. The fleur-de-lis is the emblem of the city of Lincoln and of the Virgin Mary to whom the cathedral is dedicated; the red cross and gold are the colours of St George and the county’s farming; the green stands for the fens, the Wolds and the fields, and the blue for the sky and the long North Sea coast. The design won a competition run by BBC Radio Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire Life magazine in 2005 and was registered with the Flag Institute that year, making it one of the earliest of the modern county flags. It is the one flown from County Offices in Lincoln, at the showground and on the coast, and our Lincolnshire flag is that registered pattern.
Lincolnshire Day, 1 October
Lincolnshire Day is 1 October, the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising of 1536, and the flag is flown that day on civic buildings, schools and churches from Stamford to Barton-upon-Humber. The rest of the year it goes up for the Lincolnshire Show at Grange-de-Lings in June, the Heckington, Revesby and Woodhall Spa shows, the Lincoln Imps at Sincil Bank, Grimsby Town and Boston United, Lincoln steam and vintage rallies, the Spalding bulb fields in spring, the seaside at Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes, and the aviation heritage days at RAF Coningsby, East Kirkby and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The historic county includes Grimsby, Scunthorpe and the whole of North and North East Lincolnshire. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a caravan, and 8ft x 5ft for a showground, a town hall or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show weekend or the 1st of October; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and stitching for a fenland pole that catches the wind off the Wash all winter. Eyelets on both grades; the DuraFlag can be ordered with rope and toggle for a halyard pole. There is also a Lincolnshire windsock for a caravan, a campsite or a garden pole.
Lincolnshire bunting
Lincolnshire bunting repeats the cross and fleur-de-lis on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop, a bar or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a pavilion or a show stand, and several lengths tied together will cross a market square for Lincolnshire Day.
Hand flags and table flags
Lincolnshire hand flags come in 9x6in and a larger 18x12in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Sincil Bank crowd. On the desk there is the Lincolnshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. Nottinghamshire, Norfolk, Rutland and Yorkshire are under county flags.
Lincolnshire flag FAQs
What is on the Lincolnshire flag?
A red cross edged in gold on a field quartered green and blue, with a gold fleur-de-lis in the centre for the city of Lincoln. It was chosen by public competition and registered with the Flag Institute in 2005.
When is Lincolnshire Day?
1 October, the anniversary of the Lincolnshire Rising of 1536, when the flag is flown across the county.
Does the flag cover Grimsby and Scunthorpe?

Is there a Lincolnshire windsock?
Yes, a Lincolnshire windsock in the county colours for a caravan pole, a campsite or a garden.
Do you sell Lincolnshire bunting?
Yes, rectangular bunting in 3m and 9m lengths with the cross and fleur-de-lis on every pennant.
