The Caithness flag: a Norse cross on black

The Caithness flag is black with a blue Nordic cross edged in gold, the upright set towards the hoist in the Scandinavian way, and a galley badge in the top corner by the pole. The cross speaks for the centuries when Caithness was part of the Norse earldom of Orkney, and the galley for a county that has always looked to the sea. The design was chosen by a public vote of Caithness people, and our Caithness flag carries it in every size we hold.

Where the Nordic cross flies

Wick Harbour and the Pulteney distillery, Thurso and the surf breaks at Thurso East, John o’ Groats and Duncansby Head, Dunnet Head at the very top of mainland Britain, the Castle of Mey, the Caithness County Show, the Halkirk Highland Games, the Orkney ferry at Scrabster, the North Coast 500 campervans heading west to Tongue and Durness, and Caithness exiles from Inverness to Ontario. Pair it with a saltire from the Scotland flags hub on a two-pole frontage.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Caithness has one of the widest county ranges we stock. In Flagtex, printed woven polyester with brass eyelets: 3ft x 2ft at £6.99, 5ft x 3ft at £7.99 and 8ft x 5ft at £19.99. In DuraFlag, knitted polyester with double-stitched, reinforced hems and a rope and toggle: 20x12in at £14.99, 3ft x 2ft at £29.99, 5ft x 3ft at £39.99 and 8ft x 5ft at £99.99. A Pentland Firth gale will shorten the life of any flag, so for a pole that stays up all year the DuraFlag is the sensible choice.

Caithness bunting and hand flags

Caithness bunting carries the cross on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths for a village hall, a gala float or a harbour railing. Caithness hand flags come in 9x6in at £5.99 and 18x12in at £7.99 on wooden sticks.

Caithness table flags

For a desk there is the Caithness table flag with base at 6x4in from £1.98, the 9x6in wooden table flag from £2.99 and the large 18x12in wooden table flag from £3.98 for a reception counter or a hotel bar. Aberdeenshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and the Isle of Skye are among the other Scottish counties under county and regional flags.
