The Middlesex flag: three seaxes and a Saxon crown
The Middlesex flag shows three white seaxes, the notched short swords of the Saxons, with gold hilts, arranged one above another beneath a gold Saxon crown on a red field. The seaxes have been the arms of the Middle Saxons’ county since the seventeenth century at least and were shared with Essex; the crown was added in 1910 to tell the two apart when Middlesex County Council was granted its own arms. The county was absorbed into Greater London in 1965, yet the flag has never gone away: it is a registered traditional county flag with the Flag Institute, it flies from the Guildhall in Westminster on Middlesex Day, it is the badge of Middlesex County Cricket Club at Lord’s and it still turns up on postal addresses, sports clubs and pub signs from Staines to Enfield. Middlesex Day, 16 May
Middlesex Day is 16 May, the anniversary of the Battle of Albuhera in 1811, when the county’s regiment earned the Die Hards name, and the flag is flown that day on civic buildings in the old county and at Parliament. Beyond the 16th it comes out for Middlesex cricket at Lord’s and the outgrounds at Uxbridge and Radlett, for the Middlesex Sevens tradition, for Hendon, Enfield Town, Wealdstone and Harrow Borough football, at Harrow, Hampton Court and Syon, on the Thames at Twickenham and Hampton for regattas and river days, and in the gardens of Ruislip, Pinner, Edgware, Southgate and Potters Bar where the historic county is still the address people use. Sizes, grades and fittings
The Middlesex flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a desk or a car, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a club or a pub, and 8ft x 5ft for a cricket ground, a school or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a match day or Middlesex Day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and stitching for a flag that stays up all year. Each grade has eyelets as standard; the DuraFlag can also be had with rope and toggle for a halyard pole.
Middlesex bunting
