The Kent flag: the white horse of Invicta
The Kent flag is a white horse rearing on a red field, the emblem the county has used for centuries and that every Kent council, regiment, school and sports club has carried in one form or another. The white horse is traced back to the legendary Saxon leaders Hengist and Horsa, who landed at Ebbsfleet in the fifth century and whose banner was said to be a white horse; the motto that goes with it, Invicta, unconquered, marks the tradition that the men of Kent met William the Conqueror on the Rochester road and kept their ancient customs as the price of peace. The horse appears on the county council’s arms, on Kent cricket’s badge, on Gillingham’s crest and on the white horse figures cut into the chalk at Folkestone and Wye. It is a registered traditional county flag with the Flag Institute and flies from County Hall in Maidstone, and our Kent flag is that design in the full size range.
Where the white horse flies
The flag goes up for the Kent County Show at Detling in July, the Canterbury cricket week and the Spitfire ground, the Gills at Priestfield and Maidstone United at the Gallagher, the Dickens festivals in Rochester and Broadstairs, the Whitstable oyster festival, the Faversham hop festival, the Sweeps festival in Rochester on May Day, the Dover and Deal regattas, the Tenterden and Edenbridge shows, Leeds, Dover and Hever castles, the White Cliffs and the Battle of Britain memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, and on garden poles from Dartford to Dungeness for St George’s Day, jubilees and coronations. The historic county takes in Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich, so the horse flies there too. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a caravan, and 8ft x 5ft for a cricket ground, a castle or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show or a match day; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a Channel-coast pole that flies the horse all year. Both have eyelets, with rope and toggle available on the DuraFlag for a halyard. There is also a Kent windsock for a caravan, a beach hut or a garden pole.
Kent bunting
Kent bunting repeats the white horse on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, an oast-house tea room or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a cricket pavilion or a seafront kiosk, and several lengths tied together will cross a high street in Faversham or Sandwich for a festival.
Hand flags and table flags
Kent hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Canterbury crowd. On the desk there is the Kent table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. Sussex, Surrey, Essex and Middlesex are under county flags.
Kent flag FAQs
What is on the Kent flag?
A white horse rearing on a red field, the emblem of Kent for centuries and a registered traditional county flag with the Flag Institute.
What does Invicta mean?
Unconquered. It is the county motto, from the tradition that the men of Kent kept their ancient customs after the Norman Conquest, and it goes with the white horse on the county arms.
Why is Kent called the Garden of England?
For its orchards, hop gardens and market gardens, which have supplied London with fruit and hops for centuries; the name is usually credited to Henry VIII.
Does the flag cover Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich?
Yes. They are part of the historic county of Kent, so the white horse is flown there as much as in Maidstone or Canterbury.
Which size for a garden flagpole?
A 5ft x 3ft suits a 6m garden or telescopic pole, a 3ft x 2ft suits a shorter pole, and an 8ft x 5ft needs a fixed pole of 20ft or more.
Is there a Kent windsock?
Yes, a Kent windsock with the white horse for a caravan, a beach hut or a garden pole.
How quickly will Kent flags arrive?
The full Kent range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order by 2pm and it goes out the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
