The Derbyshire flag: the rose on the cross

The Derbyshire flag is a green field with a blue cross edged in white and a gold Tudor rose at the centre. The green is for the Peak District and the Derwent and Dove valleys, the blue for the rivers and reservoirs that drive the county’s mills and feed the cities around it, and the Tudor rose is the county’s long-standing emblem, carried on the old county council arms and on the badges of Derbyshire cricket and Derby County. The design was chosen by public vote in a competition run by BBC Radio Derby and registered with the Flag Institute in 2006, one of the first of the modern county flags, and it is flown from County Hall in Matlock and from poles across the Peak. That registered pattern is our Derbyshire flag, held in the full size range and both grades.

Where the rose flies

The flag goes up for the Bakewell Show in August, the Ashbourne Shrovetide football on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, the well dressings at Tissington, Youlgreave and Wirksworth through the summer, the Chatsworth country fair, the Buxton festival and fringe, the Matlock Bath illuminations in the autumn and the Castleton garland on Oak Apple Day. It flies for Derby County at Pride Park, for Chesterfield at the Technique and for Derbyshire cricket at the County Ground, and at Carsington, Ladybower and the Monsal trail on walking and cycling weekends; Glossop, Buxton, Chesterfield, Ilkeston and Swadlincote all fly it as readily as Derby itself. The events calendar keeps the dates.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The flag is held in 20x12in for a desk, a car or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a short mast or a wall, 5ft x 3ft for a caravan, a pub or a 6m garden pole, and 8ft x 5ft for a town hall, a showground or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show or a match; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a hill-top pole that takes the Peak District weather all year. Both are eyeleted and the DuraFlag can be specified with rope and toggle for a halyard. There is also a Derbyshire windsock for a caravan, a campsite or a garden pole.

Derbyshire bunting

Derbyshire bunting repeats the rose and cross on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a shop, a bar or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a pavilion or a well-dressing stand, and several lengths tied together will cross a street in Bakewell or Ashbourne for a carnival.

Hand flags and table flags

Derbyshire hand flags come in 9x6in and a larger 18x12in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the Pride Park crowd. On the desk there is the Derbyshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayor’s parlour or a dinner. Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Cheshire and Leicestershire are under county flags.
