The Somerset flag: the red dragon on gold

The Somerset flag is a red dragon on a gold field. The dragon is the old beast of Wessex, the kingdom whose heartland was Somerset, and it has been the county’s emblem on the county council’s arms since the early twentieth century, on Somerset County Cricket Club’s badge and on the shirts of its rugby and football clubs. The plain dragon on gold, without the council’s mace, was registered with the Flag Institute in 2013 after a public vote and is now the flag flown from County Hall in Taunton to the top of Glastonbury Tor. That registered pattern is our Somerset flag; the Somerset Old flag shows the dragon holding the mace as it appears on the council arms, the version that was flown for decades before registration and that many parish poles still carry.

Somerset Day, 11 May

Somerset Day has been held on 11 May since 2015, the date chosen because it is when King Alfred raised the standard of Wessex at Egbert’s Stone in 878 before the battle that saved his kingdom, and the dragon now flies on civic buildings, schools and pubs across the county for the day. The rest of the year brings the Royal Bath & West Show at Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury Festival, the Taunton Flower Show, Frome and Mid-Somerset shows, the cricket at the County Ground, Bath Rugby at the Rec, the Somerset carnival circuit from Bridgwater through Weston, North Petherton, Glastonbury and Wells each November, and the cider-farm and wassail nights in January. Sizes, grades and fittings

The dragon flag is held in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or a carnival float, and 8ft x 5ft for a cricket ground, a town hall or a tall fixed mast. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for Somerset Day, the show and the carnival; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted grade with reinforced hems for a pole on the Levels or the Mendips that flies the dragon every day. Eyelets are fitted to both, and the DuraFlag can come with rope and toggle for a halyard pole.

Somerset bunting

Somerset bunting repeats the red dragon on gold along rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a cider-shop door or a classroom display, nine metres runs a village hall or a carnival club’s shed, and several lengths tied end to end cross a high street for Somerset Day or the carnival weekend.

Hand flags, table flags and windsock

Somerset hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for the carnival route, the County Ground and the school parade. For the desk there is the Somerset table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber or a Somerset Day dinner, with the Old dragon-and-mace table flag alongside. The Somerset windsock suits a campsite on the Quantocks or a boat on the Parrett. Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire are under county flags.
