The Flintshire flag: the black cross and four choughs
The Flintshire flag is a white field with a black cross, its edges scalloped and its ends finished in fleurs-de-lis, between four black choughs with red beaks and legs, one in each quarter. The arms are those attributed to Edwin of Tegeingl, the eleventh-century lord of the cantref of Tegeingl that became Flintshire, and the chough, the red-legged crow of the Welsh cliffs, is the bird of the north-east coast. The design was carried on the arms of the old Flintshire County Council and has come back as the banner of the county, flown from County Hall in Mold and from Flint and Holywell town halls. Our Flintshire flag is that design, stocked in two grades.
St David’s Day and the Flintshire year
The choughs fly beside the Red Dragon on St David’s Day, 1 March, on schools and civic buildings from Saltney to Prestatyn. Through the year the flag goes up for the Denbigh and Flint Show in August, Mold carnival and the Mold food festival, Flint Castle and the Flint regatta on the Dee, St Winefride’s Well and the Holywell pilgrimages, the Talacre and Gronant dunes, Hawarden Castle and the Gladstone library, Ewloe Castle and Basingwerk Abbey, Theatr Clwyd at Mold, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Flint Town United, the Greenfield Valley, the Dee estuary bird reserves at Point of Ayr, Caerwys and the Halkyn Mountain, and on garden poles in Buckley, Shotton and Queensferry for royal occasions. The historic county also took in Rhyl, Prestatyn and the detached Maelor around Overton and Bangor-on-Dee. The events calendar keeps the dates.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Flintshire flags come in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a boat on the Dee or a short mast, and 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a rugby club. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for a show day or the 1st of March; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade, hemmed and double stitched, for an estuary or Clwydian pole that catches the wind off Liverpool Bay all year. Eyelets come on both, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with rope and toggle for a halyard. An 8ft x 5ft is not part of the Flintshire range.
Flintshire bunting
Flintshire bunting repeats the cross and choughs on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres dresses a bar, a chapel hall or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a clubhouse or a show marquee, and a few strings tied together will cross the high street in Mold or Church Street in Flint for the carnival.
Hand flags and table flags
Flintshire hand flags are 9x6in on wooden sticks for a parade, a school or the showground at Denbigh. On the desk there is the Flintshire table flag with base at 6x4in, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the satin table flag for a council chamber, a mayoral dinner or an eisteddfod. Denbighshire, Caernarfonshire, Cheshire and Merionethshire are under county flags.
