The Staffordshire flag: lion, chevron and knot
The Staffordshire flag stocked here is the banner of the county arms: a gold field with a red chevron, a gold lion walking across a blue band along the top, and the Stafford knot, the three-looped knot that has been the county’s badge since the Middle Ages, sitting above the chevron. The chevron is the device of the de Stafford family, lords of the county from the Norman conquest, the gold lion on blue is the royal lion, and the knot is said to go back to the Stafford family seal of the fourteenth century, though the Potteries tale that three felons were hanged with one rope is the story everyone tells. The Staffordshire New (No Crest) flag is the clean banner; the Staffordshire Old (Crest) flag adds the crest. The knot on its own, in gold on green, is the Stafford Knot DuraFlag, the version you see on the county cricket and the old Staffordshire Regiment colours and on half the pub signs between Stoke and Stafford.
Staffordshire Day, the County Show and the Potteries
Staffordshire Day is 1 May, chosen because Josiah Wedgwood founded his pottery on that date in 1759, and since 2016 it has brought flags out on county buildings, pubs and schools from Leek to Lichfield with a week of events either side. The Staffordshire County Show at Stafford Showground in late May or early June, the Lichfield Festival in July, the Stone Food and Drink Festival, the Burton Beer Festival, the Leek Show and the Cheadle, Eccleshall and Uttoxeter carnivals all have the flag on the gate. This is our own county: our warehouse is in Stoke-on-Trent, so the Potteries, Port Vale and Stoke City supporters, the Trentham Gardens events, the Staffordshire Hoard displays at the Potteries Museum, the Cannock Chase runners and the Alton Towers staff all come to us for a flag that says where they are from. Cheshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and the rest of England are under county flags.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Both Staffordshire flags are stocked in 20x12in for a car or hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a bar or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden flagpole, a pub front or a show stand, and 8ft x 5ft for a town hall, a sports club or a tall pole. The Flagtex grade is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for Staffordshire Day and the show season; DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that stays on a council or club pole all year, with a rope and toggle for the halyard. The Stafford Knot DuraFlag comes in 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft, roped and toggled.
Staffordshire bunting
Staffordshire bunting repeats the no-crest banner on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths, and the crest version comes in the same lengths. A 3m length does a pub doorway or a market stall, 9m runs across a village hall, a school foyer or a show marquee, and several lengths join for a high street on Staffordshire Day.
Hand flags and table flags
Staffordshire hand flags on wooden sticks are the ones for a carnival, a parade or a school assembly, with the crest hand flag alongside. The Staffordshire table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for a council chamber, a reception or a civic dinner, the wooden table flag is the 9x6in version on a wooden stand, and the satin table flag is the sleeved one for a chrome base, all three also available with the crest.
Staffordshire flag FAQs
What is on the Staffordshire flag?
A red chevron on gold for the de Stafford family, a gold lion on a blue band, and the Stafford knot, the county’s badge since the Middle Ages. The crest version adds the crest above the shield.
What is the Stafford knot?
A three-looped knot used by the Stafford family from the 1300s and adopted as the badge of the whole county. It appears on the county cricket club, the old Staffordshire Regiment and the Stafford Knot DuraFlag in gold on green.
When is Staffordshire Day?
1 May, the date Josiah Wedgwood founded his pottery business in 1759, with events across the county in the surrounding week.
Which Staffordshire flag should I choose, crest or no crest?
The no-crest banner is the simpler, more legible flag for a pole; the crest version is the full arms for a civic or heraldic setting. Both come in the same sizes and grades.
What size Staffordshire flag for a garden pole?
5ft x 3ft for a pole up to about 6m, 8ft x 5ft for a taller fixed pole. Choose the DuraFlag grade for a flag that stays up through a Staffordshire winter.
Is the bunting available in the crest design?
Yes, both the no-crest and the crest banners come as 3m and 9m rectangular bunting.
How quickly can a Staffordshire flag arrive?
Every item here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, in the county itself; order before 2pm and it leaves the same day with free 1–2 day UK delivery.
