This Staffordshire Old (Crest) flag shows the full county arms, crest included: a red chevron on gold, a blue chief with a gold lion passant along the top, and the Stafford knot.
The chevron belonged to the de Stafford family, Norman lords of the county, while the three-looped Stafford knot has served as the county badge since medieval times. This crested version is the traditional heraldic banner; the plainer New flag drops the crest.
It is flown at county shows, on civic buildings and by Staffordshire people from Stoke to Tamworth who prefer the full heraldic look.
