The Shropshire flag: the three loggerheads
The Shropshire flag carries three golden leopards’ faces, known in the county as the loggerheads, on a field of blue and gold scattered with black ermine spots. The loggerheads have stood for Shrewsbury and the county since the Middle Ages, when they were taken from the royal arms and used on the town seal, and they still appear on the county council’s arms, on Shrewsbury Town’s badge and on pub signs from Whitchurch to Church Stretton. The flag was registered with the Flag Institute in 2012 and is the one flown from Shirehall and at county events. That registered design is our Shropshire flag; the Shropshire Old flag is the earlier white-and-blue drawing with the same three faces, kept as a 5ft x 3ft for anyone matching an existing pole or hanging the two side by side.
Where the loggerheads fly
The flag flies over Shrewsbury for the Flower Show in August and the river festivals on the Severn, at the Wenlock Olympian Games in Much Wenlock, at the Ludlow Food Festival and Ludlow Castle, over Ironbridge and the Gorge museums, at the Oswestry, Burwarton and Minsterley shows, on the Long Mynd and Wrekin walking weekends and at the Montgomery Place and Shrewsbury Town grounds. Telford, Bridgnorth, Market Drayton and Newport all count as Shropshire, so the loggerheads go up on village greens and pubs across the county for jubilees, coronations and St George’s Day. Sizes, grades and fittings
The registered flag comes in 20x12in for a car, a hand pole or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a pub or a float, and 8ft x 5ft for a town hall, a castle or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade for shows and one-off weekends; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and stitching for a pole on the Shropshire hills that flies the flag through every season. Shropshire bunting
Shropshire bunting repeats the loggerheads on every rectangular pennant in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres is right for a shop window or a classroom, nine metres runs along a village hall, a show stand or a pub frontage, and a few lengths tied together will cross a street in Ludlow or Shrewsbury for a festival weekend.
Hand flags and table flags
Shropshire hand flags are 9x6in on a wooden stick for a parade, a school sports day or the Wenlock games.
