The South Yorkshire flag: rose, wave and the SY shield
The South Yorkshire flag is divided green over pink by a white wavy band, with a white shield in the fly carrying a pink Yorkshire rose over a green SY monogram. It is the banner of the emblem used by South Yorkshire County Council, the metropolitan authority set up in 1974 for Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, with the wave standing for the Don, the Dearne and the Rother that run through all four boroughs and the rose marking the county as a piece of Yorkshire. The council went in 1986 but the county lives on in the fire and police services, the combined authority and the lieutenancy, and the flag has stayed in use for civic occasions. Yorkshire Day and the South Yorkshire year
Yorkshire Day on 1 August is the natural day for the flag, alongside the white rose, on town halls and schools from Stocksbridge to Thorne. Through the year it goes up for the St Leger meeting at Doncaster in September, Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, Barnsley at Oakwell, Rotherham at the New York Stadium and Doncaster Rovers at the Eco-Power Stadium, the Tramlines festival at Hillsborough Park, the World Snooker at the Crucible, the Penistone Show and the Rotherham Show, the Doncaster Racecourse Yorkshire Day fixtures, Wentworth Woodhouse and Conisbrough Castle, the Peak District side of Sheffield, Elsecar Heritage Centre, Magna and Kelham Island, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, and the Sheffield Half Marathon in April. Sizes, grades and fittings
South Yorkshire flags come in 20x12in for a hand pole, a car or a desk, 3ft x 2ft for a wall or a short mast, 5ft x 3ft for a 6m garden pole, a club or a pub, and 8ft x 5ft for a racecourse, a civic building or a tall fixed pole. Flagtex is the printed woven-polyester grade that suits a match day or the 1st of August; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted-polyester grade with reinforced hems and double stitching for a Pennine-edge pole that gets the weather all year. Eyelets are standard on both, with rope and toggle an option on the DuraFlag for a halyard pole.

South Yorkshire bunting carries the rose and wave on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres is enough for a bar, a club room or a classroom, nine metres runs along a working men’s club, a cricket pavilion or a market stall, and a few strings tied together will cross a street in Penistone or Mexborough for a gala.
