The smiley face flag
The yellow smiley is the simplest design in the shop and one of the most recognised images anywhere: two dots and a curve on a yellow disc, drawn by Harvey Ball in 1963 for a Massachusetts insurance firm and reused ever since by badge makers, record sleeves and, from 1988, the acid house scene. On a smiley face flag it does one job, which is to tell the street, the festival field or the office window that someone in there is enjoying themselves. The Smiley Face Acid flag is the rave version, the grin that became the badge of the second summer of love, and it is the one that goes up on campervans at festivals and in student halls across the country.
