The Māori flag has a black upper band and a red lower band separated by a thin white stripe, with a white koru, the unfurling fern frond, curling from the hoist.

Designed in 1990 by Hiraina Marsden, Jan Dobson and Linda Munn, it was chosen in 2009 as the national Māori flag and flies alongside the New Zealand flag on Waitangi Day. Black represents Te Korekore, the realm of potential, white the physical world and red the earth mother, Papatūānuku.

It is flown at Matariki and Waitangi Day events, at kapa haka performances and by Māori and New Zealand communities abroad. The New Zealand Maori Flag is printed on woven polyester, a lightweight cloth that flies easily and folds away for the next occasion.
