The Vietnamese flag: red with a gold star
The national flag of Vietnam is a red field with a large five-pointed gold star in the centre. It was first raised in 1940, adopted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and, with the star slightly slimmed in 1955, became the flag of the whole country on 2 July 1976 after reunification. Red is read as the blood of the revolution and gold as the Vietnamese people, with the five points of the star standing for the five groups who built the state: intellectuals, farmers, workers, traders and soldiers. The proportion is 2:3 and the star is large, filling much of the height of the field, which is why a Vietnam flag with a small star looks wrong. Our Vietnam flag is printed with the star at the specified size in a clear gold on a bright red.
The yellow flag with three red stripes
The yellow Vietnam flag with three horizontal red stripes was the flag of the State of Vietnam from 1948 and of the Republic of Vietnam, South Vietnam, from 1955 until 1975. It remains the flag of choice for many overseas Vietnamese communities and is often called the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag. We stock it in the same sizes and grades as the red flag, without taking a position on which should be flown: order the one your community, event or family uses.
Tết, National Day and the restaurant trade
The Vietnamese calendar in the UK turns on Tết, the Lunar New Year, in late January or February, when community centres, temples and restaurants in Hackney, Lewisham, Birmingham and Manchester are dressed in flags and lanterns. Vietnam’s National Day on 2 September and Reunification Day on 30 April are the state holidays, marked by the embassy and student societies, while the restaurant trade, from the phở houses of Kingsland Road to the bánh mì counters in every city, keeps a flag up all year. In sport the Golden Star Warriors, Vietnam’s football team, have become a serious force in South-East Asia and the Asian Cup, and the women’s side reached the 2023 World Cup.
Sizes and grades for a Vietnam flag
Take 5ft x 3ft for a pole, a restaurant front or a hall; 3ft x 2ft for a counter wall, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed pole or a stage; and 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester for celebrations and short runs outside, DuraFlag the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for a pole flown every day. Both have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle.
Vietnam bunting
Vietnam bunting repeats the red flag with the gold star on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape in weatherproof polyester, for a Tết fair, a restaurant frontage or a 2 September reception. Plain red and yellow lengths from the bunting range carry the colours further and also work for a three-stripe themed event.
Hand flags and table flags
Vietnam hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football, Tết parades and school events. The Vietnam table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a restaurant table or an office, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a counter. The Vietnam Veterans flag, the American veterans’ design, is also listed here for re-enactors and collectors. Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and the rest of the region are under world flags.
Vietnamese flag FAQs
What does the star on the Vietnam flag mean?
The gold five-pointed star represents the unity of the Vietnamese people, with its five points standing for intellectuals, farmers, workers, traders and soldiers. The red field stands for the revolution.
Why are there two different Vietnam flags?
The red flag with the gold star is the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The yellow flag with three red stripes was the flag of South Vietnam until 1975 and is still used by many overseas Vietnamese communities. We stock both.
Which Vietnam flag should I buy for a restaurant?
Whichever the owners and their community identify with. Official and embassy events use the red flag; many diaspora community events use the yellow three-stripe flag. Both are sold in the same sizes.
When is Vietnam’s National Day?
2 September, marking the 1945 declaration of independence. Reunification Day is 30 April and Tết, the Lunar New Year, is the biggest celebration of all.
Which way up does the Vietnam flag go?
With one point of the star pointing straight up. The flag is otherwise symmetrical, so it reads the same from either side of a pole.
What size Vietnam flag for a telescopic pole?
5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic pole; 3ft x 2ft on a short pole; 8ft x 5ft only on a fixed pole of 25ft or more.
How quickly can Vietnam flags be delivered?
Both flags and every format on this page are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse the same working day for orders before 2pm, with 1–2 day UK delivery.
