USA flags: the Stars and Stripes, its history and its proportions
The American flag has thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red and six white, for the thirteen colonies that declared independence in 1776, and a blue canton of fifty white stars, one for each state. The Continental Congress fixed the stripes and stars on 14 June 1777, the date Americans now mark as Flag Day, and the star count has grown twenty-six times since; the fifty-star version has flown since 4 July 1960, after Hawaii joined, and is now the longest-serving design in the flag’s history. The official government proportion is 10:19, but almost every flag sold in Britain, ours included, is cut at 3:5, which looks right on a UK pole and matches the Union Jack beside it.
Red, white and blue were never formally explained in 1777, though the 1782 Great Seal gave the reading most Americans use today: red for valour, white for purity and blue for vigilance and justice. The stars are arranged in nine staggered rows of six and five, which is why a cheap flag with the stars in a neat grid stands out at once. Our US flag uses the correct row-by-row artwork in all three sizes.
When Americans in Britain fly the flag
Independence Day on 4 July is the obvious one, with US military families, American schools, embassy events and the summer baseball tour wanting flags and bunting by the end of June. Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day at the end of May, Veterans Day on 11 November and the NFL London games at Tottenham and Wembley each autumn fill in the rest of the year, and a Ryder Cup or World Cup brings a surge of car flags and hand flags.
Sizes and grades of American flag
5ft x 3ft suits a garden pole, a diner frontage or an American-themed bar; 3ft x 2ft is the window and bedroom size and the one most expats order first; 8ft x 5ft is for a school, base or hotel flagpole. Flagtex is the printed polyester for a party, Flagtex Nylon the heavier sleeved cloth for regular hanging, and the DuraFlag American flag is the knitted, UV-fast grade with a reinforced hoist and clips or toggle for a flag that stays up every day.
USA bunting
USA bunting gives you a full Stars and Stripes on every pennant, rectangular or triangular, on lengths from 3m to 20m. It is the standard dressing for a 4th of July barbecue, a Thanksgiving dinner, an American diner opening or a Grease-themed school disco, and because it is printed on weatherproof polyester it can stay out all summer.
American hand flags, car flags, windsocks and table flags
USA hand flags on wooden sticks come in packs for parades, citizenship ceremonies and NFL fan zones. The USA car flag clips onto a window for game day, the USA windsock keeps the stripes moving on a campsite or RV pole, and the USA table flag with base dresses a conference table, an embassy desk or a Thanksgiving place setting.
US state flags: Texas, California, Florida, New York and the rest
All fifty states are covered in the US state flags range, printed in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft with matching bunting, hand flags and table flags for the popular states. The Lone Star of Texas, the bear of California, the seal-on-white of Florida, the blue of New York, and Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Ohio and Tennessee are the ones that sell week in, week out to expats, American football fans and themed bars.
Historical and novelty American flags
The 48-star flag of 1912 to 1959 is the Second World War version that re-enactors and museums ask for, and the 15-star, 15-stripe flag is the Star-Spangled Banner that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814. Eagle, motorcycle, Elvis, John Wayne, Native American and peace-sign designs sit in the American other flags range, and the Confederate and rebel flags are listed separately as historical designs for re-enactment and collectors. Canada, Mexico and the rest of the Americas are under world flags.
American flag FAQs
How many stripes are on the American flag?
Thirteen: seven red and six white, starting and ending with red. They stand for the thirteen original colonies, and the number has stayed at thirteen since 1818.
How many stars are on the US flag and when was the last one added?
Fifty, one per state. The fiftieth star was added on 4 July 1960 for Hawaii, and the fifty-star flag has now been in use longer than any earlier version.
What do the colours of the American flag mean?
The 1777 resolution gave no meaning, but the Great Seal of 1782 described red as valour and hardiness, white as purity and innocence, and blue as vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Which way up does the American flag hang on a wall?
With the blue canton at the top left as you look at it, whether the flag is hung horizontally or vertically. Stars at the bottom is a distress signal.
Can I fly an American flag in my garden in the UK?
Yes. The national flag of any country can be flown in England, Scotland and Wales without advertising consent as long as it carries no slogans or logos. The pole may need planning permission in some settings, but the flag does not.
What size USA flag fits a 20ft telescopic pole?
5ft x 3ft. It is the size the poles are made for; 8ft x 5ft belongs on a fixed pole of 25ft or more.
Do you stock the flags of individual US states?
Yes, all fifty, from Alabama to Wyoming, in the US state flags range, with Texas, California, Florida and New York the most popular.
