The Taiwan flag: Blue Sky, White Sun, Wholly Red Earth
The flag stocked here is the Blue Sky, White Sun and Wholly Red Earth flag: a red field with a dark blue canton in the upper hoist carrying a white sun with twelve triangular rays. The sun emblem was designed by Lu Hao-tung in 1895 for the Revive China Society, Sun Yat-sen added the red field in 1906, and the combined design was formally adopted in 1928. The twelve rays stand for the twelve months and for the twelve traditional two-hour divisions of the day, a reminder to keep striving at every hour, and the three colours are read through Sun Yat-sen’s Three Principles of the People: blue for nationalism and liberty, white for democracy and equality, red for the people’s livelihood and fraternity. The proportions are 2:3. Our Taiwan flag prints the canton in the specified deep blue with the sun’s rays sharply pointed and separated from the disc by a thin blue ring, the detail that cheap copies blur.
Double Ten, the ballpark and Taiwan in Britain
The flag’s big day is Double Ten, 10 October, marked with a parade and fireworks in Taipei and with dinners and receptions among Taiwanese communities abroad; Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival are the other occasions when the red and blue come out. In sport it is waved for the baseball team that won the Premier12 title in Tokyo in November 2024 and for the badminton of Tai Tzu-ying, though at the Olympics the team marches under a separate plum-blossom banner, so supporters in the stands bring this flag themselves. Britain’s Taiwanese community is centred on London, Manchester and the university towns, with a Taiwanese Festival in London each summer, bubble tea and beef noodle restaurants that hang the flag on Double Ten, and student societies that order hand flags and bunting for their Double Ten socials.
Choosing a Taiwan flag
The Taiwan flag is stocked in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in a single grade, a 100 denier woven polyester with a sewn header and brass eyelets, which is the lighter printed cloth suited to a restaurant wall, a society night, a classroom or a season on a garden pole. 5ft x 3ft is the standard pole and balcony flag, 3ft x 2ft fits a wall bracket or a window, and 8ft x 5ft dresses a stage, a festival gate or a tall fixed mast. There is no 20x12in or heavyweight DuraFlag version of this design at present, and the flag is supplied with eyelets rather than clips or a rope and toggle.
Taiwan bunting
Taiwan bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the Blue Sky White Sun flag and stitched to a tape. 3m trims a restaurant counter or a doorway; 9m runs round a hall, a stall at a food festival or a garden for Double Ten. The pennants are weatherproof polyester and lengths join end to end, and plain red, blue and white strings from the bunting range stretch the scheme.
Hand flags and table flags
Taiwan hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the ballpark, a parade or a society event. The Taiwan table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk or a restaurant table, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag are for a reception or a conference table, and the sleeved satin table flag suits a formal dinner. Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and the rest of east Asia are under world flags.
