Taiwan Flag

The flag of Taiwan is mostly red, with a dark blue upper hoist quarter containing a white sun ringed by twelve pointed rays; its name is Blue Sky, White Sun and a Wholly Red Earth.

Lu Hao-tung drew the sun emblem in 1895 for the Revive China Society; Sun Yat-sen later set it on a red field in 1906, and the whole design became official in 1928. The twelve rays are said to stand for the twelve months and the twelve traditional two-hour periods of the day.

It is flown on National Day, 10 October, by Taiwanese students and community associations, and at sports and cultural events. Woven polyester keeps the Taiwan Flag light enough to fly in a gentle breeze while holding bright colours.
