Spain flags: the rojigualda and what the crest means
The Spanish flag is three horizontal bands of red, yellow and red, with the yellow band twice the depth of each red one, in a 2:3 proportion. Charles III picked the red-and-yellow scheme in 1785 as a naval ensign, because the Bourbon white that Spain and France both used at sea was causing ships to be mistaken for one another, and Isabella II made it the national flag in 1843. The coat of arms in use today dates from 1981: a quartered shield for Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre with the pomegranate of Granada at the base, framed by the Pillars of Hercules and the motto Plus Ultra. Spaniards call the whole thing the rojigualda.
We stock the Spain flag with the crest, which is the state version seen on government buildings and at the football, and the Spain no crest flag, the plain civil flag that private citizens are entitled to fly. Both are made with the crest set towards the hoist so it reads correctly from the front. For fan zones there is also a Spain smiley face flag and the black Osborne bull on Spanish bull bunting, hand flags and table flags.
When the Spanish flag is flown
The Fiesta Nacional de España on 12 October, also known as Día de la Hispanidad, is the date Spanish restaurants, schools and cultural centres in Britain plan around, with Constitution Day on 6 December close behind. Spain’s run to the Euro 2024 title made the red and yellow a fixture in pubs for every international since, and El Clásico, Seville’s Feria de Abril and San Fermín in July all bring out the bunting. Expat associations and language departments tend to order a few weeks ahead of each of those.
Sizes and uses
3ft x 2ft hangs well on a classroom wall or a short wall-mounted pole, and is the one tapas bars pin behind the counter. 5ft x 3ft is the garden telescopic-pole standard and the size most people picture when they think of a Spain flag. 8ft x 5ft is the choice for commercial flagpoles, hotel frontages and festival rigs where the flag has to carry across a car park. Every size has metal eyelets in the hoist, and the DuraFlag grade can be supplied with rope and toggle or clips.
Three grades of Spain flag
Flagtex is our everyday printed polyester, light enough to tape to a wall and bright enough for the telly. Flagtex Nylon adds a heavier weave and a quadruple-stitched fly end for a season of weekends. The DuraFlag Spain flag is built for poles that never come down: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched hems, fade-resistant inks and a hoist finished for clips or rope and toggle.
Spain bunting
Spain bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants, each one a complete red-yellow-red flag, sewn to a strong tape that will survive a fortnight outside. It dresses a restaurant terrace, a street party or a school hall for a Spanish day. There is a no-crest version for a cleaner look.
Hand flags, table flags and windsocks
Spain hand flags come on a 30cm stick for children and a 60cm stick for the terraces. The Spain table flag with base is a hospitality standard for a reception desk or a conference place setting, and the Spain windsock gives a caravan or campsite pitch some colour on a still day.
Spanish regional flags: Catalonia, Andalusia, the Basque Country and more
The Spanish regional flags range covers all seventeen autonomous communities: the red-and-gold Senyera of Catalonia and the Estelada, the green and white of Andalusia, the Ikurriña of the Basque Country, the seven islands of the Canary Islands, the blue diagonal of Galicia, the crowned Senyera of Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Navarre, Murcia, Extremadura, La Rioja and the two Castiles. The bull, the smiley and other novelty designs sit in Spanish other flags, and Portugal, Gibraltar and the rest of Europe are under world flags.
Spain flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Spanish flag mean?
Officially nothing: red and yellow were chosen in 1785 for visibility at sea. The popular readings, blood for red and sun or gold for yellow, came along afterwards.
Should I buy the Spain flag with the crest or without?
The crest version is the state flag used by the government, the armed forces and at international football, so it is the one most buyers want. The plain civil flag is correct for private use and looks cleaner on bunting.
What size is the yellow band on a Spanish flag?
Half the height of the flag. The proportions are 1:2:1, so on a 5ft x 3ft flag the yellow band is 18 inches deep and each red band 9 inches.
Which way up does the Spanish flag go?
Red top and bottom with yellow in the middle, and the coat of arms sits in the yellow band slightly towards the pole. It cannot be flown upside down, but it can be flown back to front if the crest ends up on the fly side.
Do you stock the Catalonia flag and other Spanish regional flags?
Yes. All seventeen autonomous community flags are in the Spanish regional flags range, including the Senyera, the Estelada, the Ikurriña and the Andalusian arbonaida, most in 5ft x 3ft.
Can I fly a Spain flag from a UK flagpole without permission?
Yes. The national flag of any country is among the flags that need no advertising consent in England, as long as it carries no added wording, so a Spanish flag on a garden or business pole is fine.
