Red, yellow and red horizontal stripes, the yellow as wide as both reds together, with the royal coat of arms set towards the pole: the official flag of Spain.
Charles III picked these colours in 1785 so that his warships would stand out at sea, and the shield adopted in 1981 brings together Castile, León, Aragon, Navarre and Granada between the Pillars of Hercules with the motto Plus Ultra.
Spanish clubs and businesses fly it on 12 October, the national day, and supporters take it to football and Grand Prix weekends.
