Two islands, two black stars
The flag of São Tomé and Príncipe has three horizontal stripes of green, yellow and green, with the yellow stripe wider, a red triangle at the hoist and two black five-pointed stars on the yellow. Green stands for the islands' rich vegetation, yellow for the sun and for cocoa, the crop that shaped their history, red for the struggle for independence, and the two stars for the two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe. The flag was adopted in 1975, when the islands became independent from Portugal on 12 July, and is based on the flag of the liberation movement, the MLSTP. Our São Tomé and Príncipe flag sets the stars evenly on the wide yellow band.
Cocoa islands on the equator
São Tomé and Príncipe is Africa's second-smallest country after the Seychelles, lying in the Gulf of Guinea right on the equator. Early in the twentieth century it was one of the world's leading cocoa producers, and its chocolate is still prized today. Príncipe is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, rich in birds and turtles. Independence Day on 12 July is the national holiday. In Britain the flag is flown by Santomean families, Portuguese-speaking communities and chocolate lovers.
