Two black stars on a broad yellow stripe between two green ones, with a red triangle against the pole: this is the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe, the island nation in the Gulf of Guinea.
The country became independent from Portugal in July 1975 and adopted the flag the same year. Its colours follow the Pan-African palette, and each black star represents one of the two islands.
It is flown on Independence Day, 12 July, at Portuguese-speaking community festivals and by collectors completing an African set.
