The Niue flag: gold field and five stars

Niue’s flag, adopted in 1975, is unusual among flags with a Union Flag canton because its field is golden yellow rather than blue or red. The yellow stands for the bright sunshine of the island and the warm feelings of its people towards New Zealand and Britain. On the Union Flag in the canton are five yellow stars: four small ones on the arms of the St George’s cross, forming the Southern Cross, and a larger one in a dark blue disc at the centre, which stands for Niue itself, a single raised coral island in the South Pacific. Our Niue flag places the stars and disc exactly on the cross arms.

Constitution Day, whales and collectors

Niue has been self-governing in free association with New Zealand since 19 October 1974, and Constitution Day is celebrated each October with sports, crafts and feasting. The island, often called the Rock, draws divers to its clear water and visitors who swim with humpback whales from July to October. Niueans living in New Zealand, Australia and the UK fly the flag at family events, and collectors know Niue for its commemorative coins and its .nu internet domain.

Niue flag grades, bunting and table flag

The Niue flag comes as a 5ft x 3ft in Flagtex, printed lightweight woven polyester with eyelets, from £7.99; as a 5ft x 3ft DuraFlag, heavier knitted with double-stitched hems and clips; and as a 20x12in DuraFlag with rope and toggle, a good courtesy size for a yacht. Niue bunting comes in 3m and 9m from £9.98, and the Niue satin table flag is £8.39. For the realm’s other flags see New Zealand, Cook Islands and Tokelau flags.
