Niue Flag

Unusually among flags carrying a Union Flag canton, Niue's has a golden yellow field. Five yellow stars sit on the Union Flag: a large one inside a dark blue disc at the centre and four smaller ones on the arms of the red cross.

Niue adopted the flag in 1975, a year after it took up self-government in free association with New Zealand. The yellow speaks of the island's sunshine and close ties with New Zealand, the four small stars form the Southern Cross, and the big star in its blue disc is Niue alone in the Pacific.

Pacific community groups raise it on Constitution Day in October, and it is a staple of Commonwealth, Pacific and complete world-flag collections.
