The Madeira flag: blue, gold and the Cross of Christ

The flag of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was adopted in 1978. It is a vertical triband of blue, gold and blue, with the gold band twice as wide as each blue one. Centred on the gold is the Cross of the Order of Christ, a red cross with flared arms edged in white, the emblem carried on the sails of the Portuguese ships that reached the island in the fifteenth century. The two blue bands stand for the Atlantic surrounding the archipelago and the gold for the sunshine and the island’s wealth. Our Madeira flag shows the cross in its proper red and white at the centre of the gold.

Madeira Day, Funchal fireworks and Madeirans in Britain

Madeira Day on 1 July marks the region’s autonomy and the anniversary of the island’s discovery. Funchal’s New Year’s Eve fireworks over the bay and the spring Flower Festival draw visitors from Britain every year, and the island’s most famous son, Cristiano Ronaldo, means the flag is often seen at football matches too. There are large Madeiran communities in Jersey and Guernsey and around Stockwell and Vauxhall in south London, where the flag hangs in cafés and at summer festas.
