Madeira Flag

Madeira's regional flag runs blue, gold and blue in three vertical bands, the central gold one as wide as the two blues together, with the red and white Cross of the Order of Christ in its middle.

The design became official in 1978, soon after the islands gained autonomy within Portugal. Blue is the ocean around the archipelago and gold the island's warmth and light, while the cross honours the Order of Christ, under whose master Prince Henry the Navigator the Portuguese settled Madeira in the early fifteenth century.

Look for it on Madeira Day, 1 July, among the large Madeiran communities of Jersey and London, at Portuguese festas and wherever Funchal's football clubs are being supported.
