The Barbados flag: the broken trident
The flag of Barbados is a vertical triband of ultramarine, gold and ultramarine with a black trident head in the centre of the gold. The two blue bands stand for the sea and the sky, the gold for the sand of the beaches, and the trident, taken from the old colonial badge where Britannia held a whole one, has its shaft deliberately broken off to mark the break with colonial rule; its three prongs are read as government of, for and by the people. The design came from a public competition won by Grantley Prescod, an art teacher, and was first raised at midnight on 30 November 1966 as the Union Jack came down at the Garrison Savannah. When Barbados became a republic on 30 November 2021 the flag was kept unchanged. Our Barbados flag uses the deep ultramarine rather than a lighter blue, with the trident centred and its broken shaft clearly shown.
Independence, Crop Over and cricket
Independence Day on 30 November is the heart of a month of celebrations in Barbados, with the island decked in blue and gold through November and a parade at the Garrison; it is also now Republic Day. Crop Over, the summer festival that ends with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday of August, is the other flag-waving season, and Bajan communities in Reading, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and London hold their own Independence dinners, Crop Over fetes and church services. Cricket is the sport: Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, the home of Sir Garfield Sobers and the Three Ws, and the West Indies and Barbados teams, with Bajan fans at Lord’s, Edgbaston and the Oval whenever the West Indies tour. The flag also flies for Rihanna, for the Barbados netball and athletics teams and for Barbados Day events at UK universities.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Fly a 5ft x 3ft on a pole, a balcony or a club wall; a 3ft x 2ft in a window, on a desk wall or on a short pole; an 8ft x 5ft on a large fixed pole or as a stage backdrop; and a 20x12in on a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed polyester for indoor displays and short use outdoors, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges built for a season on a pole. Each has a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can also be ordered with clips or rope and toggle.
Barbados bunting
Barbados bunting is a tape of rectangular pennants in the blue, gold and trident design, in 3m and 9m lengths. One 3m run dresses a doorway or a buffet table for 30 November; a 9m run goes along a hall, a tent or a rum shop frontage for Crop Over. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and can be left out in the rain.
Hand flags and table flags
Barbados hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for cricket grounds, Kadooment and the Independence parade. The Barbados table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a high commission desk. Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Grenada flags are under world flags.
Barbados flag FAQs
Why is the trident on the Barbados flag broken?
The whole trident on the colonial badge was held by Britannia; the flag shows only the head, with the shaft broken away, to symbolise the break from colonial rule in 1966.
What do the colours of the Barbados flag mean?
The ultramarine bands are the sea and the sky; the gold band is the sand of the island’s beaches; the black trident is the people and their government.
Did the Barbados flag change when it became a republic?
No. Barbados became a republic on 30 November 2021 but kept the 1966 flag exactly as it was.
Who designed the Barbados flag?
Grantley Prescod, an art teacher, whose entry won a national competition with over a thousand submissions ahead of independence.
Which size Barbados flag for a cricket match?
A 5ft x 3ft to hold up or drape over the rail, with 9x6in or 18x12in hand flags for the group; a 3ft x 2ft is easier in a packed stand.
Is the trident printed on both sides?
Yes. The flag is printed through the polyester so the trident shows on the reverse, mirrored, on both Flagtex and DuraFlag.
