The Zimbabwe flag: seven stripes and the Zimbabwe Bird
Zimbabwe’s flag has seven horizontal stripes, green, gold, red, black, red, gold and green, with a white triangle at the hoist edged in black and carrying a red five-pointed star behind the Zimbabwe Bird. The bird is a soapstone carving found in the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, the medieval stone city near Masvingo, and it has been the national emblem since before independence. Green is the agriculture and the land, gold the mineral wealth, red the blood shed in the liberation struggle and black the heritage of the majority; the white triangle stands for peace and the star for the nation’s hopes. The flag was first raised on 18 April 1980, the night Zimbabwe became independent, and has not changed since. Our Zimbabwe flag is printed with all seven stripes in even depth and the bird and star sharply defined on the triangle.
Independence Day, Heroes’ Day and the diaspora
Independence Day on 18 April is the main national flag day, followed by Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day on the second Monday and Tuesday of August and Unity Day on 22 December. The Zimbabwean community in Britain is one of the largest outside southern Africa, with strong concentrations in Leeds, Luton, Milton Keynes, Slough, Leicester, Coventry and across London, and churches, community associations and independence dinners fly the flag every April. In sport it goes to the cricket for the Chevrons at Harare Sports Club and on tour in England, to the football for the Warriors at the Africa Cup of Nations, and to the rugby, the golf and the swimming where Zimbabwean athletes compete; Kirsty Coventry’s Olympic medals brought the flag out in 2004 and 2008.
Choosing size and grade
A 5ft x 3ft suits a pole, a balcony or a braai gazebo; a 3ft x 2ft a window or a short pole; an 8ft x 5ft a church hall backdrop or a large fixed pole; and a 20x12in a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed polyester for indoor and short-term outdoor use, DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges for a flag that stays out. Both have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle.
Zimbabwe bunting
Zimbabwe bunting is a string of rectangular pennants printed with the full seven-stripe flag, on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length dresses a doorway or a buffet for 18 April; a 9m length runs along a church hall or around a tent for a Heroes’ Day braai. The pennants are weatherproof polyester printed on both sides.
Hand flags and table flags
Zimbabwe hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for cricket grounds, parades and independence celebrations. The Zimbabwe table flag is 6x4in on a base for a desk, a restaurant table or a church office, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy reception or a community centre. South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique flags are under world flags.
