The Zambia flag: the fish eagle over the fly

Zambia’s flag is unusual because its emblem sits in the fly rather than near the pole. The green field carries, in the lower fly corner, a block of three vertical stripes, red, black and orange, with an orange African fish eagle in flight above them. Green is the country’s natural resources and vegetation, red the struggle for freedom, black the people of Zambia and orange the mineral wealth, above all copper, which has driven the economy since colonial times. The eagle represents the ability of the people to rise above the nation’s problems. The flag was designed by Gabriel Ellison and adopted on 24 October 1964, the day Northern Rhodesia became the independent Republic of Zambia; in 1996 the green was made lighter. Our Zambia flag uses the brighter post-1996 green with the eagle and stripes clearly placed at the fly.

Independence Day, Chipolopolo and Zambians in Britain

Independence Day on 24 October is the national holiday, and Africa Freedom Day on 25 May is also a public holiday. Football carries great emotion: the Chipolopolo, the Copper Bullets, lost almost their entire squad in the 1993 air crash off Gabon, and nineteen years later won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Libreville, a few miles from the crash site, a victory dedicated to the players who died. The women’s team, the Copper Queens, played their first Women’s World Cup in 2023, with Barbra Banda among the most feared strikers in the world. Zambia is a Commonwealth member with strong ties to Britain, and Zambian communities in London, Reading, Manchester, Leicester and across the country gather for Independence Day dinners, church services and cultural days, with the flag at the centre.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Zambia flags are available at 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The 5ft x 3ft is the favourite for a pole or a football crowd, and the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a wall. Flagtex is a printed lightweight woven polyester for indoor and short-term use; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems for months outdoors. All have brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle.

Zambia bunting

Zambia bunting carries the green flag with the eagle on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, ideal for a church hall, an independence dinner or a community fun day. Polyester, printed both sides and fine outdoors.

Hand flags and table flags

Zambia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for matches and parades. The Zambia table flag is 6x4in with a base, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a top table or reception. Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and the DR Congo are with the other world flags.
