The Uruguayan flag: nine stripes and the Sun of May
Uruguay’s flag has nine horizontal stripes, five white and four blue, with a white canton in the upper hoist bearing the Sol de Mayo, a golden sun with a face and sixteen rays, eight straight and eight wavy. The stripes stand for the nine departments the country had when the flag was adopted; the Sun of May is the Inca sun that also appears on the Argentine flag, recalling the May Revolution of 1810 in Buenos Aires from which independence across the Río de la Plata flowed. The first version of December 1828 had nineteen stripes, cut to nine on 12 July 1830 so the flag read more cleanly at sea. Alongside the national flag Uruguay recognises two further official flags, the flag of Artigas and the flag of the Treinta y Tres Orientales, which fly together with it on public buildings. The proportions are 2:3. Our Uruguay flag prints the sun in gold with the alternating straight and wavy rays and the face drawn, which is the detail most often lost on cheaper flags.
25 August and La Celeste
Independence Day on 25 August marks the declaration of 1825, and 18 July, Constitution Day, and 19 June, Artigas’s birthday, are the other national dates. Uruguayans in Britain are a small community, largely in London, and the flag is seen most around football, which Uruguay has done better at than any country of its size: world champions in 1930 as hosts and again in 1950 in the Maracanã, Olympic champions in 1924 and 1928, and record winners of the Copa América with fifteen titles. La Celeste reached the 2010 semi-finals and are in the 2026 finals, which is what the World Cup 2026 Uruguay team bundle is for: a flag, a run of bunting and hand flags in one pack for a watch party, cheaper than the three separately. Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani and Darwin Núñez at Liverpool and Manchester United gave the flag a place in Premier League grounds, and Los Teros, the rugby side who played in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 World Cups, bring it to the rugby club bar.
Choosing the right Uruguay flag
The Uruguay flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft and in two grades. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester, light, economical and right for a party or a season on a pole; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems that will stay up all year without fraying. 5ft x 3ft is the garden-pole and pub size, 3ft x 2ft the window and wall-bracket size, 8ft x 5ft the backdrop for a fan park or a stage, and 20x12in the car and hand-pole size. Both have a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be specified with clips or rope and toggle.
Uruguay bunting
Uruguay bunting is 3m or 9m of rectangular pennants printed with the striped flag and sun, sewn to a tape. The 3m length goes over a bar or a parrilla, the 9m round a garden for an asado or along the wall of a pub showing the match. It is polyester, so rain is no problem, and lengths can be joined. Plain sky blue and white lengths from the bunting section match La Celeste’s colours.
Hand flags and table flags
Uruguay hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for fan zones and parades. The Uruguay table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base for a desk, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or a trade stand, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a formal table. Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile are under world flags.
