The Ukrainian flag: blue over yellow

The Ukraine flag is two equal horizontal bands, blue above yellow, in a 2:3 proportion. The colours go back to the arms of the medieval Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, a gold lion on blue, and were carried as a national banner from 1848; the Ukrainian People’s Republic flew blue over yellow in 1918, the Soviet years replaced it, and the Verkhovna Rada restored it as the state flag on 28 January 1992. The usual reading is a blue sky over a field of ripe wheat, the image of the steppe in summer. Our Ukraine flag uses the deep azure specified in the 1992 standard rather than a pale sky blue, with the yellow printed through so both faces match, and since 2022 it has been one of the most-ordered flags we stock.

The Ukraine Crest Trident flag adds the tryzub, the golden trident of Volodymyr the Great that forms the state coat of arms, to the centre of the bicolour. It is the flag you see at embassy events and on the shirts of the national team, and it makes a strong alternative to the plain flag on a second pole.

Independence Day, Flag Day and solidarity events

Ukrainian Flag Day is 23 August and Independence Day the day after, 24 August, so most community events in the UK fall on that weekend; Unity Day on 22 January and the 24 February anniversary are the other dates when councils, churches and schools raise the flag. Beyond the calendar, the Ukrainian flag has flown continuously on town halls, cathedrals, pubs and front gardens since 2022, which is where the heavier DuraFlag grade earns its keep. Sport brings its own demand: the national football team in the Nations League and Euro qualifiers, Usyk fights, and Ukrainian athletes at the Olympics and Paralympics.

Which size Ukrainian flag?

For a house pole, a church gate or a fundraiser, the 5ft x 3ft Ukrainian flag is right. A window, a stall or a short pole needs 3ft x 2ft; a council flagpole or a vigil backdrop, 8ft x 5ft; a hand pole or car window, 20x12in. Every Ukrainian size hangs from a sewn header set with brass eyelets, and on DuraFlag you can have rope-and-toggle or clips.

Flagtex or DuraFlag?

Buying several for a march or a school assembly? Flagtex, the printed woven-polyester Ukraine flag, is priced for it. When a flag is to stay on a pole outside a town hall or a community hub for months, choose DuraFlag: a heavier knit, hems stitched double and a strengthened header. An order in by 2pm leaves that day, and the blue-and-yellow is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse.

Ukraine bunting

A church-hall fundraiser, a welcome event for Ukrainian families, a school culture week or a café window can all be hung with Ukraine bunting: blue-and-yellow pennants on a strong tape, 3m or 9m long, printed on weatherproof polyester. For a UK–Ukraine event, alternate it with Union Jack bunting.

Hand flags and table flags

Marches, vigils and arrivals are where Ukraine hand flags appear, held on wooden sticks at 9x6in or 18x12in. In a council chamber, a support centre or a classroom stands the 6x4in Ukraine table flag with base, while a reception or boardroom takes the chrome-mounted satin table flag. Poland, Moldova and the Baltic states are grouped under world flags.

Ukrainian flag FAQs

What do the colours of the Ukraine flag mean?

Blue is read as the sky and yellow as a field of wheat, the classic summer view of the Ukrainian steppe. Historically the colours come from the gold lion on blue of the Galicia-Volhynia coat of arms.

Which way up does the Ukrainian flag go?

Blue on top, yellow underneath. Yellow over blue was used by some groups in the 19th century but the state flag has been blue over yellow since 1918 and officially since 28 January 1992.

What is the trident on the Ukraine flag?

The tryzub is the state coat of arms, a golden trident taken from the seals of Volodymyr the Great in the 10th century. The plain national flag has no emblem; our Crest Trident flag adds it to the centre.

When is Ukraine’s Independence Day?

24 August, marking the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. National Flag Day is the day before, 23 August.

Is it allowed to fly a Ukrainian flag in the UK?

Yes. National flags of any country can be flown in England without planning permission, and the Ukrainian flag has been flown by councils, churches and householders across the UK since 2022.

What size Ukraine flag for a telescopic pole?

A 6m telescopic pole or a house-wall pole carries the Ukrainian 5ft x 3ft. Save the Ukrainian 8ft x 5ft for fixed poles of 25ft or higher, and 3ft x 2ft for a short or hand-held one.
