The Swedish flag: a yellow cross on blue
The Sweden flag is a yellow Nordic cross on a blue field, the upright of the cross set toward the hoist in the pattern first used by Denmark and shared by all five Nordic countries. The colours come from the Swedish coat of arms, the three gold crowns on blue that go back to the 14th century, and a blue flag with a yellow cross is recorded from the 1560s. The current proportions, 10:16, and the exact shades were fixed by the Flag Act of 22 June 1906, after the union with Norway was dissolved and the old union mark was removed from the canton. Printed right through its woven polyester, our Sweden flag is set out with the cross placed correctly off-centre and the deeper blue and warm yellow of the 1906 standard, not the pale copies sold for a few pounds.
National Day, Midsummer and Lucia
Sweden’s National Day on 6 June, Midsummer on the Friday nearest 24 June and Lucia on 13 December are the three dates when Swedes in the UK bring the flag out, led by the Swedish Church in Marylebone and its Christmas fair, the Scandinavian Christmas market at Rotherhithe and the Swedish schools and clubs in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. A Swedish Midsummer needs a maypole wrapped in birch and a line of flags around the garden, and crayfish parties in August use the same bunting. On the sport side it is Sweden in the Euros and World Cup qualifiers, the Damlandslaget in the Women’s Euros, ice hockey world championships and the Swedish golfers and tennis players, plus Eurovision, where a Swedish entry is usually among the favourites. IKEA-themed parties and Scandi cafés keep the small flags in demand.
Which size Swedish flag?
A garden pole, a Midsummer party or a café front is the place for a 5ft x 3ft Swedish flag. Pick 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a shop window or a short pole, while the 8ft x 5ft Swedish size suits a school or church flagpole or a stage backdrop, and 20x12in a Midsummer hand pole or a car. Each yellow-cross size is hemmed with brass eyelets in a sewn header; the Swedish DuraFlag can instead carry rope-and-toggle or clips.
Flagtex or DuraFlag?
Eurovision nights, parties and classroom use call for Flagtex, the printed woven-polyester Sweden flag. Flagtex Nylon, available at 5ft x 3ft, is a featherweight cloth that rises in a soft breeze. For a Swedish company’s UK office pole or a church flown daily, DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-sewn hems and a stiffened header. Delivery is free in 1–2 days and orders before 2pm leave the same day; all three Swedish grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse.
Sweden bunting
Each pennant of Sweden bunting carries the yellow cross, in rectangle or triangle cut at 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m, plus an 18.25m giant-rectangle run for a hall or marquee, all weatherproof polyester sewn onto strong tape. Hang it over a Midsummer garden, a Swedish Church fair, a Eurovision party or a Scandinavia week at school, and add Norway and Denmark bunting for a Nordic line-up.
Hand flags and table flags
A National Day picnic, the football or a Midsummer procession all want Sweden hand flags, whose wooden sticks carry a 9x6in or 18x12in flag. For a café counter, a language school or a Midsummer table there is the 6x4in Sweden table flag with base; a Swedish firm’s reception or boardroom gets the satin table flag on chrome. Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have hubs of their own in world flags.
Swedish flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Swedish flag mean?
Blue and yellow are the colours of Sweden’s coat of arms, the three gold crowns on a blue field, used since the 14th century. The cross is the common Nordic cross shared with Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
Why is the cross on the Sweden flag off-centre?
All Nordic cross flags place the upright of the cross nearer the hoist, following the Danish Dannebrog. The 1906 Flag Act fixes the Swedish proportions at 10:16 with the cross arms in a 5:2:9 split along the length.
When was the Swedish flag adopted?
The blue flag with a yellow cross is recorded from the 1560s, and the modern flag was defined by the Flag Act of 22 June 1906, which also set Flag Day on 6 June.
When is Sweden’s National Day?
6 June, commemorating Gustav Vasa’s election as king in 1523 and the 1809 constitution. It became a public holiday in 2005. Midsummer, on the Friday between 19 and 25 June, is the other big flag day.
What is the difference between the Swedish and Finnish flags?
Sweden flies a yellow cross on blue and Finland a blue cross on white; Norway’s blue cross is edged in white on red, and Denmark’s white cross sits on red.
What size Sweden flag for a telescopic pole?
Fly the Swedish 5ft x 3ft from a garden pole or 6m telescopic pole. The 3ft x 2ft is for short Swedish poles, and the 8ft x 5ft only for a fixed flagpole of at least 25ft.
