The Suriname flag: one gold star on red

Suriname’s flag has five horizontal bands: green at the top and bottom, thin white bands inside them, and a broad red band in the centre, twice the height of the green, carrying a large yellow five-pointed star. Green is the fertility of the land and hope for the future, white justice and freedom, red progress and the love of a young nation, and the gold star the unity of all its ethnic groups and a golden future built on sacrifice. That unity matters in one of the most diverse countries in South America, with Hindustani, Creole, Javanese, Maroon, Indigenous, Chinese and European communities. The flag was chosen through a competition and adopted on 25 November 1975, the day of independence from the Netherlands, replacing a 1959 flag with five coloured stars joined by an ellipse. Our Suriname flag keeps the 2:1:4:1:2 band proportions around the star.

Independence Day, Keti Koti and the Natio

25 November, Srefidensi, is the national holiday, and 1 July is Keti Koti, Emancipation Day, when the end of slavery in 1863 is marked with music, traditional dress and the flag. Diwali, Phagwa, Eid and Chinese New Year are all public occasions too. Surinamese football is a story of the diaspora: Dutch greats such as Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids and Virgil van Dijk have Surinamese roots, and since nationality rules were relaxed a number of Dutch-born players have turned out for the Natio. In Britain the community is smaller than in the Netherlands, but Surinamese families in London and the Midlands fly the flag on 25 November and at Keti Koti gatherings, and it is a common request for Caribbean festivals, school international days and multicultural events.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Suriname flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is the lighter woven polyester for occasional and indoor use; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems built for long outdoor use. Both are finished with brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can come with clips or rope and toggle.

Suriname bunting

The Suriname bunting range is wider than most: rectangle or triangle pennants, in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths. A 3m run suits a doorway, the 5m and 9m a hall or a garden, and the 20m length a street party, a festival field or the outside of a community centre. All are polyester and fine outdoors.

Hand flags and table flags

Suriname hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades and Keti Koti processions. The Suriname table flag is 6x4in with a base, and the large wooden table flag 18x12in suits an office or a reception desk. Guyana, the Netherlands, Brazil and French Guiana sit among the world flags.
