The St Vincent and the Grenadines flag: the Gems of the Antilles

The flag of St Vincent and the Grenadines is a vertical tricolour of blue, gold and green, with the gold band twice the width of the others and three green diamonds arranged in a V in its centre. The V stands for Vincent, and the diamonds for the islands themselves, the Gems of the Antilles. Blue is the Caribbean sky and sea, gold the warmth of the people and the golden sands of the Grenadines, and green the lush vegetation of the main island and the vitality of the people. This version was adopted on 21 October 1985, replacing the independence flag of 1979, which carried a breadfruit leaf and the coat of arms on the gold band. Our St Vincent flag, catalogued as Saint Vincent, is the current 1985 design with the diamonds in the correct V arrangement.

27 October, Vincy Mas and Vincentians in the UK

Independence Day on 27 October marks the end of British rule in 1979 and is celebrated with a parade at Victoria Park in Kingstown. Vincy Mas, the carnival held in late June and early July, is the islands’ biggest festival, and the Nine Mornings festivities before Christmas are a unique Vincentian tradition. The flag is also flown for West Indies cricket and for Kingstown’s Arnos Vale ground. Britain’s Vincentian community dates from the 1950s and 1960s and is especially strong in High Wycombe, which has one of the largest Vincentian populations outside the Caribbean, as well as in London, Leeds and Huddersfield. Independence dinners, Windrush celebrations and fundraising after the 2021 La Soufrière eruption and Hurricane Beryl in 2024 have all brought the blue, gold and green out in British towns.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Available sizes are 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The 5ft x 3ft is the one to fly from a pole or carry in a parade, and the 3ft x 2ft is the choice for a hall or bedroom wall. Flagtex is the economical lightweight print; DuraFlag is the heavier, longer-lasting knitted fabric with double hems. Every flag has brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle.

St Vincent bunting

St Vincent bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants, each with the blue, gold and green and the three diamonds. Use it to dress a community hall, a Caribbean restaurant or a garden for an independence weekend.

Hand flags and table flags

St Vincent hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for carnival processions, cricket crowds and school Black History Month assemblies. The St Vincent table flag is a 6x4in desk flag with a base, and the large wooden table flag 18x12in suits a reception. Grenada, St Lucia, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are among the world flags.
