The St Helena flag: wirebird and sailing ship
St Helena flies a Blue Ensign with the Union Flag in the canton and the island’s shield in the fly. The shield, introduced in 1984, is in two parts. The upper part is yellow and shows the wirebird, a small long-legged plover found nowhere else on earth and the island’s national bird. The lower, larger part shows the island’s rugged coastline with a three-masted sailing ship approaching under full sail, flying the English flag, a reminder that St Helena was a vital port of call for East India Company ships on the long voyage home from Asia. Our St Helena flag prints the wirebird and ship clearly against the yellow and blue of the shield.
St Helena Day, Napoleon and the Saints in Britain
St Helena is one of the UK’s overseas territories, a volcanic island in the South Atlantic that shares a governor with Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. St Helena Day on 21 May marks the island’s discovery by Portuguese sailors in 1502. Napoleon spent his final exile at Longwood House from 1815 to 1821, and Jonathan, the giant tortoise at Plantation House, is celebrated as the world’s oldest known living land animal. Many islanders, known as Saints, have settled in Britain, particularly in Swindon and Reading, and fly the flag at the annual Saints gatherings and family celebrations.
