The Solomon Islands flag: five stars and a golden diagonal
A thin yellow band runs diagonally across the Solomon Islands flag from the lower hoist to the upper fly, dividing a blue triangle at the top from a green one at the bottom. Five white five-pointed stars sit in the blue near the hoist. The blue is the ocean and the rivers, the green the land and its forests, and the yellow the sunshine. The stars originally stood for the five districts of the islands at independence; today they are read as the provinces and the people of the whole archipelago, which spreads across nearly a thousand islands east of Papua New Guinea. The flag was adopted on 18 November 1977, a few months before independence, and has not changed since. On our Solomon Islands flag the stars stay crisp and evenly spaced even on the smaller sizes.
Independence Day, the Pacific Games and island sport
The Solomon Islands became independent from Britain on 7 July 1978 and remain a Commonwealth realm, so Independence Day on 7 July is the big flag occasion, with celebrations in Honiara and island gatherings overseas. Honiara hosted the Pacific Games in 2023, the largest event the country has ever staged, and the flag was everywhere in the new national stadium. Futsal is the national passion: the Kurukuru are among the strongest futsal teams in Oceania and have played at several FIFA Futsal World Cups, while the football side and the beach soccer team, the Bilikiki, carry the five stars too. The community in Britain is small, which is why the flag is usually ordered for a specific reason: a Pacific Islands cultural day, a church link with a Melanesian diocese, a university society, a returning volunteer or a family history tied to the Guadalcanal campaign of the Second World War.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Pick Flagtex, the lighter woven print, for indoor and occasional use, or DuraFlag, the heavyweight knitted polyester with strengthened hems, for a pole that stays up. Brass eyelets are standard, and DuraFlag can be supplied with clips or rope and toggle.
Solomon Islands bunting
Solomon Islands bunting repeats the diagonal flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m runs, good for a Pacific Islands stall, a classroom map wall or a 7 July get-together. The polyester pennants are double-sided and hold up in the rain.
Hand flags and table flags
Solomon Islands hand flags on wooden sticks suit a parade, a school international day or a futsal match. The Solomon Islands table flag is 6x4in on a base for a desk or a dinner, and the large wooden table flag stands 18x12in for a reception. Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa are under world flags.
