The Sicily flag: the Trinacria on red and gold
The flag of Sicily is divided diagonally from the top of the fly to the bottom of the hoist, red in the upper hoist half and yellow in the lower fly half, with the Trinacria in the middle. The Trinacria is a head of Medusa with snakes for hair and ears of wheat around it, from which three bent legs run out, one for each of the island’s three capes: Peloro, Passero and Lilibeo. The symbol is ancient, found on Greek coins from Syracuse, and the wheat recalls the island’s days as the granary of Rome. The red and gold are the colours of Palermo and Corleone, the two cities that joined forces in the Sicilian Vespers revolt of 1282, and the design became the official flag of the Region of Sicily in 2000. Anyone who knows the Isle of Man will recognise the three legs, but the Sicilian version has the Medusa face at the centre. Our Sicily flag shows the face, snakes and wheat in full detail.
Festa days, Autonomy Day and Sicilian football
Sicilians fly the Trinacria on 15 May, the Festa dell’Autonomia that marks the special statute of 1946, and at the great religious feasts: Sant’Agata in Catania in early February and Santa Rosalia in Palermo in mid-July, both with street processions lasting days. Football supporters of Palermo and Catania carry the Trinacria beside their club colours, and it is popular with Messina and Trapani fans too. Britain has a long-settled Italian community with strong Sicilian roots, and the flag appears at Italian church festivals in London, Bedford and Peterborough, Sicilian restaurants and delis, weddings, and family reunions where three generations still talk about the old village. It is also a favourite with holidaymakers back from Taormina or Cefalù who want something more particular than the Italian tricolour.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Sicily flags start at 20x12in for a car or a small pole and go up through 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft to an 8ft x 5ft for a big mast or a festa backdrop. There are two grades: Flagtex, a lighter printed polyester for indoors and shorter outings, and DuraFlag, a heavier knitted fabric with double-stitched edges for a flag that stays outside. All have brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle instead.
Sicily bunting
Sicily bunting carries the Trinacria on every rectangular pennant, in 3m to frame a deli counter or a pizzeria window and 9m to run around a church hall or a garden for a family festa. The fabric is weatherproof polyester printed both sides.
Hand flags and table flags
Sicily hand flags on wooden sticks are the ones to hand to children at a saint’s day procession or to wave at a match. The Sicily table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base, ideal for a restaurant table, a reception or a desk. For the rest of the country see Italy, Sardinia and Venice among the world flags.

Why is the Sicily flag red and yellow?
Red and yellow are the colours of Palermo and Corleone, allied cities in the Sicilian Vespers uprising of 1282.
