The Seychelles flag: five rays from the lower hoist
Few national flags look like the Seychelles flag. Instead of stripes or a cross it has five oblique bands that start from a single point at the bottom of the hoist and widen towards the top and the fly, like rays rising over the horizon, a design meant to show a young country moving into the future. Blue stands for the sky and the Indian Ocean, yellow for the sun, red for the people and their work for unity, white for justice and harmony, and green for the land and its natural environment. The flag was adopted on 18 June 1996, replacing the earlier red-white-green design, when the country returned to multi-party politics. Our Seychelles flag keeps each band in its correct angle and order, so the rays line up properly from the hoist whatever size is ordered.
Independence Day, Creole festival and the Island Games
The Seychelles became independent from Britain on 29 June 1976, and 29 June is now the National Day, with a parade at the Unity Stadium in Victoria and flags along every road on Mahé. Constitution Day on 18 June and the Festival Kreol in late October, a week of Creole music, food and language, are the other big flag dates. In sport, the islanders compete hard at the Indian Ocean Island Games against Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar, and the flag goes with the Pirates football side and the country’s sailors and swimmers. Seychellois families in Britain, many with long links through the Commonwealth and British citizenship, bring the five rays out for National Day lunches, Creole nights with sega music, and weddings, while diving clubs and honeymooners who have been to Praslin and La Digue hang one as a holiday souvenir.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Seychelles flag runs from a 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole up to an 8ft x 5ft for a tall mast, with 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft in between for a wall, a stall or a garden flagpole. Choose Flagtex, a light woven polyester for indoor use and events, or DuraFlag, the heavyweight knitted grade with reinforced hems for a flag that flies for months. Both come with brass eyelets; DuraFlag can also be ordered with clips or rope and toggle for a halyard.
Seychelles bunting
Seychelles bunting sets the rayed flag on rectangular pennants along a cord, 3m for a mantelpiece, a buffet table or a shop counter and 9m for a hall, a garden party or a beach-themed restaurant. The pennants are polyester, readable from both sides and fine outdoors for an Independence Day barbecue.
Hand flags and table flags
Seychelles hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in, for a National Day procession, a school geography lesson or the finish line at a regatta. The Seychelles table flag is 6x4in on its own base, a neat desk flag for a travel agency or an office, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a conference table. Mauritius, Madagascar, the Maldives and the Comoros are among the world flags.
