The Senegalese flag: pan-African stripes and a star
Senegal’s flag is a vertical tricolour of green, yellow and red with a green five-pointed star in the middle of the yellow band. The three colours are the pan-African set taken from Ethiopia’s flag by the independence movements of the 1950s, and in Senegal they are read with a local accent: green for Islam and for hope, yellow for the wealth of the land and the fruits of labour, red for the blood of the independence struggle and for life. The star stands for openness and unity, and it also marks the flag apart from the near-identical tricolour of neighbouring Mali, which has no star. The flag was adopted on 20 August 1960 when the short-lived Mali Federation broke up and Senegal went its own way under Léopold Sédar Senghor. The proportions are 2:3. Our Senegal flag prints the star in the correct green and centres it precisely on the yellow band.
4 April, the Lions of Teranga and Senegal in Britain
Independence Day on 4 April brings a military parade down the Boulevard Général de Gaulle in Dakar and flags on every taxi, and the flag flies again for Tabaski, for the Grand Magal pilgrimage to Touba and for the laamb wrestling nights that fill the stadiums. In sport the Lions of Teranga are the main reason British buyers come looking for it: Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, beat England 3-1 at the City Ground in June 2025 as the first African side ever to defeat England, and have qualified for the 2026 World Cup. This collection includes the World Cup 2026 Senegal team bundle of flag, bunting and hand flags in three sizes for supporters. Senegalese in Britain are a smaller community than in France but a visible one, in London, Manchester and Birmingham, with Senghor’s poetry, Youssou N’Dour’s concerts and Premier League players from El Hadji Diouf to Sadio Mané and Nicolas Jackson keeping the flag familiar.
Choosing a Senegal flag
The Senegal flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is the lighter printed woven polyester for a bar, a classroom or a tournament; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a pole flown through every season. 5ft x 3ft is the garden pole and balcony size, 3ft x 2ft the wall bracket and car window size, 8ft x 5ft is for a stage, a fan zone or a 20ft mast, and 20x12in fits a hand pole. All have a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be made up with clips or a rope and toggle.
Senegal bunting
Senegal bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants printed with the tricolour and star, sewn to a tape. Three metres trims a doorway or a television wall; nine metres loops a bar, a community hall or a garden for a World Cup night or a 4 April party. The polyester pennants are weatherproof and lengths join end to end, and plain green, yellow and red strings from the bunting range extend the scheme.
Hand flags and table flags
Senegal hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for the fan park, a parade or a school assembly. The Senegal table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk or a bar, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or a sweepstake table, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a formal dinner. Mali, Gambia, Guinea and Ivory Coast are under world flags.
