The Saudi flag: green, the Shahada and the sword

The flag of Saudi Arabia is a green field carrying the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, in white Thuluth calligraphy, with a white sword beneath it. The inscription reads “There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God”, and the sword, its hilt sitting below the start of the text, is taken to stand for justice and for the strength of the state founded by Abdulaziz Ibn Saud. Green has been the colour of the Saudi banner since the Emirate of Nejd in the eighteenth century, and the present layout, including the single straight sword, was fixed by royal decree on 15 March 1973. Because the flag carries scripture it is treated with particular care: it is never lowered to half-mast, and it is kept off clothing, packaging and anything that would be sat on or thrown away. Our Saudi Arabia flag uses the deep green of the official specification with the inscription in crisp white, in the 2:3 proportion.

National Day, Founding Day and the Green Falcons

Saudi National Day on 23 September marks the unification of the kingdom in 1932 and is the day most Saudi flags go up, with Founding Day on 22 February, introduced in 2022, now the second fixed date. In the UK that means the embassy and cultural bureau in London, Saudi student societies at universities from Glasgow to Brighton, trade delegations and the growing number of Saudi-owned businesses, restaurants and events spaces. On the sport side the Green Falcons have given Saudi fans plenty to wave for, from the 2022 win over Argentina to the 2026 World Cup, and the Saudi Pro League, Formula 1 at Jeddah and heavyweight boxing in Riyadh all draw a UK audience that wants the flag on the wall.

Sizes and grades for a Saudi Arabia flag

The 5ft x 3ft flag is the one to buy for a flagpole, an embassy reception or a university society stand; 3ft x 2ft fits a smaller pole, a bedroom wall or a market stall; 8ft x 5ft is for a large fixed pole, a stage or a hotel frontage; and 20x12in is the car and hand-pole size. Flagtex is the standard printed polyester for occasional use at a reasonable price; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges and a reinforced header for a pole that flies the flag every day. Fittings on either grade are a sewn header with two brass eyelets, with clips or rope-and-toggle available as alternatives on the DuraFlag.

Printed-through flags and the inscription

Our stock flags are printed through the cloth, so the reverse shows the design in mirror image as on almost every printed national flag. Fly the flag with the hoist to the left when the inscription reads correctly, which is the obverse.

Saudi Arabia bunting

Saudi Arabia bunting repeats the green flag along a tape in 3m and 9m lengths, with the pennants printed on weatherproof polyester and sewn rather than glued, so a run can go up outside for a National Day garden party, around a trade-show booth or along the counter of a Saudi coffee house. Combine it with plain green bunting from the bunting range when you need a longer run in the national colour.

Hand flags and table flags

Saudi Arabia hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for welcome lines, student events and football crowds. The Saudi Arabia table flag is the 6x4in desk flag with a base for a meeting room, a conference table or a consular desk, and the large wooden table flag is the 18x12in version for a reception or a boardroom. For the Gulf neighbours, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman flags are all under world flags.

Saudi flag FAQs

What does the writing on the Saudi Arabia flag say?

It is the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith: “There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God”, written in white Thuluth script. The sword below it represents justice and the strength of the kingdom founded in 1932.

Why is the Saudi flag never flown at half-mast?

Because it carries the Shahada, lowering it is considered disrespectful to the words themselves. Saudi Arabia is one of a handful of countries whose flag is kept at full mast even during national mourning.

When is Saudi National Day?

23 September, the anniversary of the 1932 unification of the kingdom. Founding Day on 22 February, commemorating the first Saudi state of 1727, has been a second public holiday since 2022.

Which way round does the Saudi flag go?

Hang it so the inscription reads correctly from right to left with the hoist on the viewer’s left; on a printed flag the reverse will appear mirrored, which is normal for a single-layer flag.

Is the Saudi flag the same green as the flag of Pakistan?

No. The Saudi flag is a plain green field with white inscription and sword and no crescent, whereas the Pakistani flag is a darker green with a white hoist band, crescent and star. The two are easy to tell apart at any distance.

What size Saudi Arabia flag for a flagpole?

5ft x 3ft suits a 6m telescopic pole or a standard wall-bracket pole; use 8ft x 5ft on a fixed pole of 25ft or more and 3ft x 2ft on a short pole. All sizes keep the 2:3 proportion.
