The Peruvian flag: red, white and the escudo

Peru’s flag is a vertical triband of red, white and red. The civil flag, flown by the public, is the plain triband; the state flag adds the national coat of arms, the escudo, to the centre of the white band: a shield with a vicuña, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia spilling coins, for the animal, plant and mineral wealth of the country, under a wreath of palm and laurel. The red and white were decreed by General José de San Martín in 1820, and the story goes that he chose them after watching a flock of flamingos, red-winged and white-breasted, rise from the bay at Paracas; the vertical arrangement dates from 1825. We stock both versions: the Peru crest flag with the escudo, which is the one most people picture, and the Peru flag without crest, the plain civil flag, both in the full size range.

Fiestas Patrias and La Blanquirroja

The Fiestas Patrias on 28 and 29 July, marking the declaration of independence in 1821, are the national flag days, and in Peru every house is required to fly the flag through July; 7 June is Día de la Bandera, Flag Day, commemorating the Battle of Arica. The Peruvian community in the UK, centred on London with groups in Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, holds Fiestas Patrias parties, embassy receptions, processions for the Señor de los Milagros in October and Peruvian food festivals where the flag is everywhere. In sport it flies for La Blanquirroja, the national football team that returned to the World Cup in 2018 after 36 years, for Peruvian surfers and volleyball players, and for the Inti Raymi and Machu Picchu anniversaries that draw Peruvian dance groups out across Britain.

Which size and grade

Use a 5ft x 3ft on a pole, a restaurant wall or a balcony; a 3ft x 2ft on a window, a desk wall or a short pole; an 8ft x 5ft for a hall or a large fixed pole; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the lighter printed polyester for indoor displays and short outdoor use, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems for a season on a pole. Each flag has a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle.

Peru bunting

Peru bunting carries the crest flag on polyester pennants sewn to a tape, and it is one of the few in this part of the range offered in both rectangle and triangle cut and in 3m, 5m, 9m and 20m lengths. A 3m or 5m run dresses a restaurant counter or a doorway for 28 July; 9m goes along a hall; 20m does a whole street party or a marquee. The pennants are printed on both sides and can be left out in the rain.

Hand flags and table flags

Peru hand flags on wooden sticks, with the crest, come in 9x6in and 18x12in for football crowds, processions and school events. The Peru table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy desk or a function. Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Colombia flags are under world flags.

Peruvian flag FAQs

Should I buy the Peru flag with or without the crest?

The version with the coat of arms is the state flag and the one most supporters and restaurants use; the plain red, white and red is the civil flag that Peruvians fly at home. We stock both.

What is on the Peruvian coat of arms?

A vicuña for the animals of Peru, a cinchona tree for its plants and a cornucopia of gold coins for its minerals, framed by palm and laurel branches.

Why is the Peruvian flag red and white?

San Martín chose the colours in 1820; legend says they came from a flock of flamingos taking off over the bay at Paracas.

When are Peru’s Fiestas Patrias?

28 July, the anniversary of the 1821 declaration of independence, and 29 July, honouring the armed forces; Flag Day is 7 June.

What lengths does Peru bunting come in?

3m, 5m, 9m and 20m, in rectangular or triangular pennants, all printed with the crest flag.

Which Peru flag size for a football screening?

8ft x 5ft on the wall behind the screen, 5ft x 3ft to hold up and 9x6in hand flags on the tables.

How quickly can a Peru flag arrive?

Both flag versions, the bunting and the hand and table flags are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse; order before 2pm for same-day dispatch and free 1–2 day UK delivery.
