The Paraguayan flag: two faces, one tricolour

Paraguay’s flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and blue, the colours of liberty taken from the French model during the independence years, and it is famous among flag collectors because its two sides are different. The front carries the national seal, a gold five-pointed star inside a wreath of palm and olive with the words República del Paraguay around it; the back carries the Treasury seal, a lion guarding a staff topped by a red cap of liberty under the motto Paz y Justicia. The colours were fixed in 1842 under the dictator Carlos Antonio López, and the seals have been redrawn several times, most recently in 2013 when the design was simplified and the ratio set at 3:5. Red is read as justice, white as peace and blue as liberty. Our Paraguay flag shows the national seal with the star and wreath, the face flown towards the viewer on a pole.

14 May, Flag Day and the Albirroja

Independence is celebrated over two days, 14 and 15 May, remembering the bloodless rising of 1811 against the Spanish governor in Asunción, and Flag Day follows on 14 August. The other great gatherings are sporting: Paraguay’s footballers, the Albirroja, have won the Copa América twice and took Olympic silver in Athens in 2004, and after a sixteen-year absence they have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, so the flag will be out in force from June. This collection carries the World Cup 2026 Paraguay team bundle of flag, bunting and hand flags in three sizes for a supporters’ night. Paraguayans in Britain are a small community, found in London and around the universities, and the flag also goes to Spanish-language schools, to collectors drawn by the two-sided design, and to tereré and asado evenings where the red, white and blue hang beside the grill.

Choosing a Paraguay flag

The Paraguay flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is the economical printed woven polyester for a party, a classroom or a short season outdoors; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched hem for a pole that flies all year. The 5ft x 3ft is for a garden pole or a balcony, 3ft x 2ft for a bracket or a car window, 8ft x 5ft for a stage, a fan zone or a 20ft mast, and 20x12in for a hand pole or a vehicle. All sizes have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be fitted with clips or a rope and toggle.

Paraguay bunting

Paraguay bunting is sold as 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular tricolour pennants sewn to a tape. A 3m string frames a doorway or a television; 9m runs round a garden, a bar or a hall for a World Cup match or a 14 May party. The pennants are weatherproof polyester, lengths join end to end, and plain red, white and blue strings from the bunting range match the colours.

Hand flags and table flags

Paraguay hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for a fan zone, a parade or a classroom. The Paraguay table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk or a bar, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or a sweepstake table, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a formal setting. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Bolivia are under world flags.
