The Palestinian flag: three bands and a red triangle
The Palestine flag is three equal horizontal bands of black, white and green with a red triangle at the hoist pointing into the centre of the flag. The four colours are the pan-Arab colours, first combined on the flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916, and the same set appears on the flags of Jordan, Kuwait, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. In the traditional reading, drawn from a thirteenth-century poem, the colours are those of the Arab dynasties: black for the Abbasids, white for the Umayyads, green for the Fatimids and red for the Hashemites. The flag was adopted by the Palestine Liberation Organisation in 1964 and has been the flag of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority since. The Palestine flag we stock keeps the triangle to its correct depth, half the length of the flag, and prints the green and black so they stay distinct in low light.
Where the flag is flown
Palestinian flags in the UK are flown at cultural festivals and film weeks, at community and faith gatherings, on Palestinian restaurants and bakeries, at academic and charity events, and by supporters of the Palestine national football team in Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers. Families fly it at weddings and graduations, and it is bought by schools, universities and museums for displays on the Middle East. Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and the wider region are under world flags.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The Palestine flag is stocked in 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a stall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a shop front or carrying at an event, and 8ft x 5ft for a hall, a stage or a flagpole. The Flagtex grade is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for events and seasonal use. DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag on a pole outdoors through the year, supplied with clips or a rope and toggle to suit the halyard.
Palestine bunting
Palestine bunting repeats the flag on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres frames a doorway, a stall or a counter, nine metres runs down a hall or across a marquee for a wedding or a festival, and lengths tie end to end for a longer run.
Hand flags and table flags
Palestine hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, sold singly so you can order the exact number for a parade, a festival or a school event. The Palestine table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for an office, a conference table or a restaurant counter, the wooden table flag and large 18x12in wooden table flag suit a dinner or an exhibition stand, and the satin table flag is the sleeved version for a chrome stand.
Palestinian flag FAQs
What do the colours of the Palestinian flag represent?
Black, white, green and red are the pan-Arab colours from the 1916 Arab Revolt flag, traditionally linked to the Abbasid, Umayyad, Fatimid and Hashemite dynasties.
How is the Palestine flag different from the Jordan and Sudan flags?
All three use a red triangle at the hoist with horizontal bands. Jordan’s triangle carries a white star, Sudan’s triangle is green with red, white and black bands, and Palestine’s has no star and the bands run black, white, green.
Which way up does the Palestinian flag go?
Black band at the top, green at the bottom, with the red triangle on the pole side. Our eyelets are on the triangle edge.
What size Palestine flag for carrying at an event?
5ft x 3ft is the usual size to carry or hold up; 3ft x 2ft is lighter for a child. The 9x6in and 18x12in hand flags on sticks are the easiest to wave.
Is there a heavier Palestine flag for a flagpole?
Yes, the DuraFlag grade in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft has double-stitched hems and a choice of clips or rope and toggle for a permanent pole.
What lengths does the Palestine bunting come in?
3m and 9m lengths of rectangular pennants on tape, which can be joined for a longer run.
