The Niger flag: desert, river and sun

Niger's flag has three horizontal bands of orange, white and green, with an orange circle in the middle of the white band. Orange stands for the Sahara desert in the north, white for purity and hope, and green for the fertile south and the valley of the Niger river. The disc represents the sun. The flag was adopted in 1959, shortly before independence from France on 3 August 1960. It is often confused with India's flag, which has saffron, white and green bands but a blue wheel at the centre, and with the Ivory Coast flag, whose orange, white and green stripes run vertically. Our Niger flag shows the orange disc centred on the white band.

Independence Day, Agadez and the Sahel

Independence Day on 3 August is a national holiday. The historic centre of Agadez, with its towering mud-brick minaret, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Aïr mountains and Ténéré desert are home to Tuareg herders and traders. In the UK the flag is flown by Nigerien families and charities working in the Sahel, and it is a regular request for school Africa days.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Niger flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, from £6.99. For a classroom the 20x12in is plenty; for a pole, 5ft x 3ft. Flagtex suits short-term display with its light printed finish, and DuraFlag suits year-round flying with its heavier knit and stronger hems, with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.

Niger bunting

Niger bunting lines the orange, white and green flag along rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths for a school corridor or a community fundraiser.

Hand flags and table flags

Niger hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in. The 6x4in Niger table flag has a base, and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suits a desk. Nigeria, Mali and Chad are in our world flags.
