The Nepal flag: two pennants, a moon and a sun
Nepal’s flag is the only national flag in the world that is not a four-sided shape. It is two stacked right-angled pennants in crimson, the colour of the rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower, with a dark blue border, and it carries a white moon with eight visible rays in the upper pennant and a white twelve-pointed sun in the lower one. The two pennants are usually said to represent the Himalayas or the two main religions of the country, Hinduism and Buddhism, and the moon and sun express the hope that the nation will last as long as they do. The present form, with the faces removed from the sun and moon, was adopted on 16 December 1962, and the constitution sets out a famously exact geometric construction for it. Because the shape has no rectangle to fill, our Nepal flag prints the full double pennant on a white rectangular field, which keeps the proportions right and gives a normal header for the pole.
Dashain, Tihar and the Nepalese community in Britain
Dashain in September or October is the longest festival of the Nepali calendar, followed a few weeks later by Tihar, the festival of lights, and Nepali New Year falls in mid-April; all three bring the flag out at temples, community halls and family homes. Britain has one of the largest Nepalese communities outside Asia, concentrated in Aldershot and Farnborough, Folkestone, Ashford, Reading, Swindon and Plumstead, and Nepali festivals, Nepal Day events and the annual Nepali Mela in London all use the flag in quantity. It also flies for the Nepal cricket team, for Everest anniversaries and for the Nepalese restaurants that mark Constitution Day on 20 September.
Sizes and grades
The 5ft x 3ft is right for a pole, a temple entrance or a stage; the 3ft x 2ft for a window, a shorter pole or a restaurant wall; the 8ft x 5ft for a hall backdrop; and the 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the lighter printed polyester for indoor displays and short use outdoors, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with reinforced hems for a season on a pole. Both grades have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag is also available with clips or rope and toggle.
Nepal bunting
Nepal bunting is a tape of rectangular pennants printed with the double-pennant flag, in 3m and 9m lengths. Use a 3m length over a doorway or along a shrine table for Tihar, and a 9m length along a hall or across a marquee for a mela. The pennants are polyester, printed on both sides, and will take a shower.
Hand flags and table flags
Nepal hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for melas, parades and the cricket. The Nepal table flag is 6x4in on a base for a desk, a restaurant table or a community office, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a reception or a function table. India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Tibet flags are under world flags.
Nepalese flag FAQs
Why is the Nepal flag not rectangular?
It keeps the shape of the two triangular pennants that were flown by the Rana and Shah rulers of Nepal; when the modern flag was fixed in 1962 the double-pennant shape was retained.
What do the moon and sun on the Nepal flag mean?
They express the wish that Nepal will endure as long as the sun and moon, and are also read as the cool of the mountains and the heat of the lowlands.
How do you fly a flag that is not rectangular?
Our Nepal flag is printed on a white rectangular field so it has a standard header and eyelets, and it flies and hangs like any other 5ft x 3ft flag.
What colour is the Nepal flag?
Crimson red, the colour of the rhododendron, with a dark blue border and white sun and moon.
Which Nepal flag size for a temple or a mela?
8ft x 5ft for a stage or a large wall, 5ft x 3ft on a pole or at the entrance, and 9x6in hand flags for the procession.
Which grade should I pick?
Flagtex for indoor displays and festival days; DuraFlag if the flag will stay on a pole outside for weeks.
