The Mozambique flag: book, hoe and star
The flag of Mozambique has three horizontal bands of green, black and yellow divided by thin white stripes, with a red triangle at the hoist bearing a yellow five-pointed star. On the star sit an open book, a crossed hoe and a rifle with a bayonet. The design, adopted on 1 May 1983, is based on the flag of FRELIMO, the movement that led the country to independence from Portugal in 1975. Green is the riches of the land, black the African continent, yellow the mineral wealth, white the peace the people sought and red the struggle for independence; the star stands for internationalism, the book for education, the hoe for farming and food, and the rifle for vigilance and defence. Our Mozambique flag prints the emblem crisply enough that the book and hoe are visible even on the 20x12in, with the white edging kept between the bands.
Independence Day, the Mambas and the Commonwealth link
Independence Day on 25 June is the national day, with Heroes’ Day on 3 February honouring Eduardo Mondlane and Mozambican Women’s Day on 7 April as other flag occasions. Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995 as the first member with no constitutional link to the British Empire, so the flag is part of every Commonwealth Day line-up in March. In sport the country is proudest of Maria Mutola, the 800m Olympic champion of 2000 and a three-time world champion, and of Eusébio, born in Maputo and one of the greatest players in the history of football; the Mambas, the national side, have played at several Africa Cup of Nations. In Britain the Mozambican community is small and spread across London, Manchester and other cities, but the flag is also asked for by aid charities working after the cyclones of recent years, by schools in Commonwealth link projects and by travellers back from the coast at Tofo or the Bazaruto islands.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Order a 5ft x 3ft for a pole or a hall, a 3ft x 2ft for a window or a desk wall, an 8ft x 5ft for a stage or a tall fixed mast and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the woven polyester with a printed finish, for indoor use and occasional outdoor flying; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight polyester, double-stitched at the fly, for a mast that stays rigged. Brass eyelets in a sewn header are standard, and DuraFlag also comes with clips or with a rope and toggle.
Mozambique bunting
Mozambique bunting runs rectangular pennants of the full flag, emblem and all, along a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Hang 3m around a classroom board, a charity stall or a buffet; 9m spans a church hall, a marquee or a community centre for 25 June. The double-sided printed polyester pennants are fine outdoors for a weekend.
Hand flags and table flags
Mozambique hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Independence Day, Commonwealth assemblies and athletics meets. The Mozambique table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk or an NGO office, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a conference or a reception. South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Portugal and Angola flags are under world flags.
