The Moroccan flag: a green star on red
The Morocco flag is a plain red field with a green five-pointed star drawn in outline, its lines interlaced so the pentagram is open in the middle. Red has been the colour of Moroccan banners since the Alaouite dynasty came to the throne in the seventeenth century, and a plain red flag flew over the sultanate until 1915, when the green star was added to distinguish it from other red flags on the water. The star is the Seal of Solomon; its five points are usually read as the five pillars of Islam, and green is the colour of the Prophet. It is one of the simplest national flags in the world and one of the hardest to print well, because a thin interlaced star on a solid red field shows every registration error. The Morocco flag we stock gets the star centred and the interlacing right.
The Atlas Lions, Throne Day and 18 November
Morocco became the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022, and the flag has not come down in the UK since: the Atlas Lions fill pubs and shisha lounges for every qualifier and every Africa Cup of Nations tie, the World Cup 2026 Morocco team bundle is for the next tournament, and with Morocco co-hosting the 2030 World Cup the flag will be everywhere for years. The national holidays are Throne Day on 30 July, marking the King’s accession, Independence Day on 18 November and the Green March anniversary on 6 November, and the Moroccan community around Golborne Road in North Kensington, in Crawley, Manchester and Edinburgh marks them with flags over the cafés and tagine restaurants. Beyond the diaspora, the flag is bought for Marrakech-themed weddings and parties, for riad-style restaurant interiors and by schools covering North Africa. Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and the Arab world are under world flags.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Choose 20x12in for a car or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a wall, a café or a stall, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub or the match, and 8ft x 5ft for a restaurant frontage, a hall or a flagpole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for a tournament or a celebration; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag on a pole in all weathers, with clips or a rope and toggle.
Morocco bunting
Morocco bunting puts the red flag and green star on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length dresses a café counter or a doorway, 9m runs across a restaurant or a hall for Throne Day or a World Cup night, and lengths tie together for a street or a marquee.
Hand flags and table flags
Morocco hand flags on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in are the match-day and parade flags. The Morocco table flag with base is the 6x4in desk flag for an embassy, a travel agent or a restaurant, the wooden table flag and large wooden table flag are the top-table versions, and the satin table flag is sleeved for a chrome stand.
Moroccan flag FAQs
What does the star on the Moroccan flag mean?
The green interlaced pentagram is the Seal of Solomon, added to the red Alaouite flag in 1915. The five points are generally taken to stand for the five pillars of Islam and green for the Prophet.
Why is the Moroccan flag red?
Red has been the colour of the ruling Alaouite dynasty since the 1600s and the sultanate flew a plain red flag until the star was added.
When are Morocco’s national days?
Throne Day on 30 July, Green March Day on 6 November and Independence Day on 18 November. Football dates fill the rest of the calendar.
What size Morocco flag for a café or restaurant?
3ft x 2ft for a wall inside, 5ft x 3ft for a window or frontage, 8ft x 5ft for a big façade. The 3m bunting dresses a counter.
Is the star printed on both sides?
Yes, the print goes through the polyester so the star shows on both faces of the flag.
What lengths does the Morocco bunting come in?
3m and 9m rectangular-pennant lengths on tape, joinable for longer runs.
