The Moldovan flag: a tricolour with the eagle

Moldova flies a vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red with the state arms centred on the yellow band: a golden eagle holding an Orthodox cross in its beak, a sceptre and an olive branch in its talons, and on its breast a shield divided red over blue bearing an aurochs head between a star, a rose and a crescent. The arms are what separate it at a glance from the plain tricolour of neighbouring Romania, with which it shares its colours and its Latin heritage. The flag was adopted on 27 April 1990, a year before independence, and 27 April is now kept as Flag Day. For its first two decades the reverse was left blank, which made Moldova one of a handful of flags with two different faces; since 2010 the arms are shown on both sides, mirrored on the back. The proportions are 1:2. Our Moldova flag reproduces the full arms rather than a simplified eagle, so the aurochs and the small charges around it read correctly even at 20x12in.

27 August, Limba Noastră and the wine harvest

Independence Day on 27 August recalls the 1991 declaration and is followed four days later by Limba Noastră, the holiday of the national language on 31 August, so the last week of August is one long run of flag-draped concerts in Chişinău and in diaspora halls abroad. National Wine Day on the first weekend of October fills the capital’s central square with producers from Purcari, Cricova and the Codru hills and is the other date when the tricolour is everywhere. Moldovans in Britain are a fast-growing community, concentrated in London and the Home Counties and often carrying Romanian passports, with Orthodox parishes, Saturday schools and an annual Mărţişor celebration on 1 March when red-and-white tassels are exchanged. In sport the flag is waved for Moldova’s visits to Wembley in World Cup qualifying, for the Sheriff Tiraspol side that beat Real Madrid in the Bernabéu in 2021, for Eurovision acts from Zdob şi Zdub to the saxophonist of SunStroke Project, and for the country’s wrestlers and weightlifters.

Choosing a Moldova flag

We hold the Moldova flag in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft and in two grades. Flagtex is the economical printed polyester for a party wall, a classroom or a season outdoors; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with a double-stitched hem and a lifespan to suit a pole that flies every day. The 5ft x 3ft is the usual garden pole and balcony flag, 3ft x 2ft fits a wall bracket or a car window, 8ft x 5ft dresses a stage or a tall fixed mast, and 20x12in goes on a hand pole or a car aerial. Every size has a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be supplied with clips or a rope and toggle for a halyard pole.

Moldova bunting

Moldova bunting comes as 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular tricolour pennants stitched to a tape. Three metres frames a doorway or a buffet table; nine metres loops a church hall, a restaurant terrace or a school corridor for an Independence Day evening. The polyester pennants shrug off rain and the lengths tie end to end, and solid blue, yellow and red strings from the bunting range pad out a bigger scheme.

Hand flags and table flags

Moldova hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades, matches and school assemblies. The Moldova table flag is a 6x4in desk flag on a plastic base, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception desk or a conference table, and the sleeved satin table flag is the formal choice for a consular or wedding table. Romania, Ukraine and the rest of eastern Europe are listed under world flags.

Moldovan flag FAQs

What is on the Moldovan flag?

A vertical blue, yellow and red tricolour with the state arms on the yellow band: an eagle holding a cross, sceptre and olive branch, with a shield showing an aurochs head, a star, a rose and a crescent.

How is the Moldova flag different from Romania’s?

The colours and layout are the same; Moldova adds the eagle coat of arms in the centre. Romania’s flag is plain.

Are both sides of the Moldovan flag the same?

Since 2010, yes: the arms appear on both faces, mirrored on the reverse. Before that the back of the flag was plain.

When is Moldova’s national day?

Independence Day is 27 August. Flag Day is 27 April, and Limba Noastră, the language holiday, falls on 31 August.

Which grade of Moldova flag should I buy?

Flagtex for indoor use, parties and short seasons outdoors; DuraFlag for a pole that is flown all year, as its knitted polyester and double-stitched hem last far longer.

What size Moldova flag fits a garden flagpole?

5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic pole is the standard pairing. Use 3ft x 2ft on a wall bracket and 8ft x 5ft on a 20ft mast or as a backdrop.
