The Micronesia flag: four stars, four states
The flag of the Federated States of Micronesia is light blue with four white five-pointed stars arranged in a diamond around the centre. The blue stands for the Pacific Ocean, and the stars for the four states of the federation: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The design grew out of the flag of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, a similar blue flag that carried six stars. The FSM flag was adopted in 1978, and the country became fully independent under a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986.
