The Mauritius flag: four equal bands

The flag of Mauritius, the Quatre Bandes, has four horizontal bands of equal depth in red, blue, yellow and green, and is the only national flag in the world made up of four horizontal stripes. It was designed by Gurudutt Moher, a primary school teacher, and raised at independence on 12 March 1968. Red is the struggle for freedom and independence, blue the Indian Ocean in which the island lies, yellow the new light of independence shining over the nation and green the agriculture and the greenery of Mauritius through all twelve months. The colours are also taken from the coat of arms granted in 1906, with its key, star, sugar cane and dodo. Our Mauritius flag keeps the four bands exactly equal and prints the blue in the strong royal shade of the official standard, with red at the top.

Independence Day, Divali and the Champ de Mars

Independence Day on 12 March, which is also Republic Day since 1992, is marked with the flag-raising at the Champ de Mars in Port Louis and celebrations across the island, and the flag comes out again for the island’s many festivals: Divali, Thaipoosam Cavadee, Eid, Chinese Spring Festival, Père Laval pilgrimage in September and the Festival Kreol in December with its sega. Horseracing at the Champ de Mars, the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere, football with the national side Club M, the Indian Ocean Island Games and the island’s Olympic boxers and sailors carry the colours in sport. Britain has a large Mauritian community, concentrated in London, particularly in the north and east, and in Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester, and the High Commission in London and community associations hold 12 March dinners, sega nights and Divali gatherings where the flag is on every table.

Sizes, grades and fittings

A 5ft x 3ft is right for a flagpole, a community hall or a restaurant wall; a 3ft x 2ft for a window, a desk wall or a stall; an 8ft x 5ft for a large fixed pole or a stage backdrop; and a 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short use outdoors, and DuraFlag the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched edges for a season on a mast. Both have a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be supplied with clips or rope and toggle.

Mauritius bunting

Mauritius bunting is a tape of rectangular four-band pennants in 3m and 9m lengths. One 3m run dresses a doorway, a buffet or a classroom for 12 March; a 9m run goes along a hall, a marquee or a restaurant for a sega night or a Divali party. The pennants are polyester, double-sided, and fine to leave out in the weather.

Hand flags and table flags

Mauritius hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for Independence Day events, football and school presentations. The Mauritius table flag is 6x4in on a base for an office, a travel agent or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits a high commission desk or a reception. Seychelles, Madagascar, India, South Africa and Réunion flags are under world flags.
